Bit of quick advice nap dropping
« on: February 06, 2015, 08:51:44 am »
DS 33 months pretty much dropped nap but if out and about or chilling on sofa may nod off....but we have EW 5am sigh, wondering if it might be worth a long pushchair walk for a long nap around 12.30pm see if he's OT?
Most days he's been doing BT 6.45 WU 5.30, I can't get him bed earlier due to work in the week. Yesterday he fell asleep on the sofa 2-2.30pm and was still faffing at 7.45pm but was in bed but then up at 5am?!

Totally lost and don't know whether to just go CT no nap. Mood pretty much ok bit clingy and few tantrums but always short lived x

I think I'd get rid of nap, and pull Bt in earlier.  Seems like the nap is not helping your cause right now...oh hang on, I see you say you can't do BT earlier....can you tell us what your normal BT routine is, what time you get home etc and we'll see if we can trim it down to get things even 15 mins earlier for you?

Going against the norm here, but for Ben those EWs are always OT.  I know for most it's UT, but for us he seems to sleep later in the morning when he's well rested.  That said, if you offer a good nap you are kind of going backwards in the process...but I get it's a process, like 2 steps forward 1 step back kind of thing.

Just wanted to mention it because we are the other side of the coin :)

I'd go for no naps, too. Beyond a certain point they just reinforce the to-ing and fro-ing wrt to ot. It's much simpler with a whole day and then they can self regulate by falling asleep earlier or sleeping in.

I feel your pain, I have an ew boy too. At least now he can read it is easier!

I would go with dropping nap ct too. Worked for dd. how is lo with tacking on sleep?

I would go for ebt as best as you can. With dd when we first dropped the nap day length was only 10.5h days but she is hsn and tacks on. That was from last July-dec. since then I got sick of faffing about with day lengths and have set bt at 7 and she has only now started to self regulate.

If you can't do ebt I would go for set bt that you know is achievable daily and stick with that. There will be ot hell but imo it would be quickest way through transition if ebt isn't possible. You could always do a micro nap (20 min max) if he ew.

Hth!

Oops we did a nap in pushchair today for 35 mins he just couldn't keep awake.
3 days he's at nursery so I don't get him home till just after 5pm then has a quick snack tea, bath etc so normally heading upstairs for bed by 6.15 but then BT wee delaying and then wants a poo but does fall asleep pretty quickly normally before 7pm.
On no nursery I could try 6pm BT but often as were at afternoon activities he will nod off in the car if I'm not careful!! He doesn't seem to tack on anymore  ???
Who knew it would be this hard lol x

It's the hardest transition we did - at least it was the last though. No more naps, ever!!!

Sophie would wake at 5am when she needed to drop that nap. It was tricky to work out as she would go to sleep at 7 just fine so I assumed she needed the nap still and the 5am meant OT but no, it was the nap causing the problem.
She was very high sleep needs so in the first couple weeks of no nap there were days she went to bed as early as 5.30pm, and yes she slept all night! Took a couple weeks to settle into the new routine but she soon got used to it

Avoid long journeys if possible! Sing, give him something to eat/do/read...

It's hard as both parents live nearly 2 hours away but visiting is prob only once every couple if months but next week is one of those days but we might just go earlier say 10am use iPad with a few kids programmes on then hope he only nods off for an hour...can never get EBT at in laws as numerous cousins running riot!!!
Last night was 7.20pm-5.30am with a 35/40 min nap so not too bad I guess!
Very snotty again so poss under weather...urghh nursery winter germs one cold after another!!X
