One week old - where to start?
« on: July 08, 2015, 06:15:42 am »
My daughter is one week old today (born 38.5 weeks Caesarian). She does not want to wake up at all during the day and would easily sleep for 6 or so hours if I let her. Currently I am waking her to feed (formula) every 3 hours. I manage to keep her awake for about 20 minutes and get about 50mls into her. At night, she is waking more frequently for food (however is still sleepy, not alert). How do I keep her awake more during the day so she will feed more and therefore require less at night?
I am trying to ensure the day feeds are light and noisy but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
Currently we are doing:
7am Wake her to feed
7.20am Sleep
10am Wake to feed
10.30am Sleep
1pm Wake to feed
1.30pm Sleep
4pm Wake to feed
4.30pm Catnap
6pm Wake to cluster feed
Bath
7pm Cluster feed
7.15pm Sleep
10pm She wakes up for food
12pm She wakes up for food
3.30am She wakes up for food
5am She wakes up for food
This is pretty consistent the last couple of days. Is it normal? I know she is so young...

Congratulations on your new baby!

It sounds like you are doing great. She is pretty normal for a newborn, and will wake up gradually as she gets older. Just keep going and see if you can encourage day feeds gently, as you are doing.
