45 min nap since 7w (20w old now) HELP PLEASE
« on: June 01, 2015, 18:29:00 pm »
Hi everyone, I've been reading a lot of posts on this forum to help me with my little boy (first time mom! :D )

My sweetheart is a really active and curious boy. He don't want to miss anything! When where not at home he can handle a 4 hour wake stretch as he will fight sleep to death!!  :-[ He never fall asleep by himself when he's tired. He will always end up crying or fussing prior going to sleep.

He will be 20 weeks old in a few days and he takes short crappy naps since he's 7 weeks old. Sometimes his naps will be 1.5 to 2.5 hours and I don't know why because i'm not doing anything different!  ???

He's going to sleep on its own and awake, sucking his thumb and sleeping on its side. When putting baby to bed, it takes 2 to 15 min to settle down (he now only fusses). He will only sleep if his room is really dark. The last nap of the day will sometimes be in the car or on the pram. He stopped sleeping in his swing at around 2 months and he won't sleep on us or in our bed. He made a lot of progress on going to sleep by himself! ;D At first, I though it was the problem of these 45 min naps...

He started teething AND rolling. I started to use a sleep positionner this week as he cannot roll back to its side by himself, it seems to be helpful.
Since teething began, he wakes up every 1 to 2 hours at night, after midnight. Somedays he can cry for an hour chewing on his fists (we then offer warm water and tylenol) and somedays he will go back to sleep on his own. Sometimes he won't go back to sleep after the 4:30 AM waking (he wil cry for 30 min+ so we wake him at 5AM, feed and back to sleep at around 5:45)
But I hope it's just a phase and he will get used to it... I'm focussing on day sleep for now...

In the morning nap, he can almost always go back to sleep at the 45 min mark (fussing up to 15 min).
The other nap is a lot harder. I can see he's trying really hard to go back to sleep but he seems he can't get to it and ends up crying and screaming to death and is unsoothable!

I put him to bed when I see he's tired (his tired clues are more fussing and eye rubbing, sometimes yawning) and he's usually awake somewhere between 1.5 to 1.75 hour.

I tried to ssh-pat but it seems to make him even more angry when I go in.
I tried to ignore his tired clues and watch the clock only.
I tried to increase his A time (up to 2 hours!) but it's not changing anything.
I tried the wake to sleep but not working either; He's fully awake at 45 min ev-e-ry times:o
I tried to add more tummy time and exercise.
I tried to have calm activity times (wich is clearly not his type!  :P)
I tried to feed him at the 45 min mark (he's not hungry)
I tried to feed him before the nap (still waking up at 45 min)
I tried to put a pacifier but he gets more mad (he's not a paci baby :( )

Below are its routines (yup, I had to got a ''plan B'' routine for the 45 min naps that are a daily problem)

Here's his general routine (45 min napping):
E  06:30
A
S  07:30 to 10:00 (wakes at the 45 min mark but will usually go back to sleep)
E  10:00 (formula + solids)
A
S  11:30 to 12:15 (45 min but won't go back to sleep, that's here the day starts to get crappy  ;))
A
E  13:30
S  13:45 to 14:30 (45 min but won't go back to sleep)
A
S  15:45 to 16:30 (catnap - somedays he's so OT he won't even sleep in the pram or in the car!)
E  16:30 (solids + formula)
A  17:30 (bath)
E  18:00
S  18:30 or 45 (will wake at the 45 min mark if he did not have his last catnap)

Here's when he's having a really good day routine (our ideal routine!):
E  06:30
A
S  07:30 to 10:00 (wakes at the 45 min mark but will usually go back to sleep)
E  10:00 (formula + solids)
A
S  11:30 to 13:00 (wakes at the 45 min mark but will sometimes go back to sleep, it can take up to 30 min)
E  13:00
A
S  15:00 to 15:45 (catnap)
E  16:15 (formula + solids)
A  17:30 (bath)
E  18:00
S  18:30 or 45

I'm deseperate. I need help and advice please!!

Hi and welcome to the boards! He needs more awake time hun. Have a look here: Average A times- BOOKMARK ME!
At 20 weeks he probably needs closer to 2.5hrs to do a decent nap - 45 mins naps is a classic sign that he's not tired enough to sleep for longer.

Also his first nap is very earlier after wake up and VERY long! To me, it seems like that 6.30am wake is more like a night waking and his day doesn't really start until 10am?? That would mean his 'day' is only 9 hrs long and a REALLY long night, so you might look at balancing out his day and night so that they are each around 12 hrs.

Thank you for your help, it worked yesterday but today he woke up screaming at 40 minutes. We did the exact same thing as yesterday. I'm so confused about what i'm supposed to do when it happens! Today I managed to get him back to sleep usign ssh-pat, but he keeps waking up every 10 minutes for the rest of his nap. What does it mean? Increasing the A time helped a lot, he goes down awake like a champ in less than 2 to 5 minutes!!
