5 month help with timing of third nap
« on: June 06, 2015, 00:10:17 am »
Hi everyone, with your help I realized my son was not having enough A time wich resulted into short crappy 45 min naps!! Increasing it and now he sleeps from 1.5 to 2 hours for both morning and afternoon nap.

My problem is the third nap. When he was taking shorts nap, he would have one around 4:00 to 4:30 and BT at 6:30. It worked great.

Now that he takes full naps in the day, he will fight this last nap. Today he cried for 30 min when I finally gave up and went for a car ride. He fell asleep in two minutes in the car!! I know he is tired as he rubs his eyes and is very fussy. I'm having trouble dealing with the timing and putting to bed at this last nap. I'm also not sure if the solids should be before or after that nap.

I need to say that he doesn't fight the 2 other naps of the day. He usually go down in 2 to 5 minutes.

Here is my easy routine ;

E - 6:30
A -
S - 8:00 to 10:00

E - 10:00
A -
E - 11:00 (solids)
A -
S - 12:00 to 14:00

E - 14:00
A -
S - 16:00 (here is the problem!)

E - 16:45 (solids)
A -
E - 18:30
S - 19:00

Thank you :)

Hi  there :)  What time does he wake up in the morning? Do you think you could slowly increase that first A time to 2 hours and do an EBT  on some days?  It looks like he's starting the 3-2 transition and the odd 2 nap day might make him tired enough to take the cn on the other days.

What do you think?

P.s. You might find this link helpful  :) All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months

hi!! Thank you for the fast answer! His wake up time is different every day! it goes between 5:30 to 7:00 and it drives me crazy.

for the morning yes i'm trying to slowly increase his first A time to 2h. today was 1:45. I read the post on the 3-2 transition and I wasn't sure if that was it but i'll give it a try. Yesterday he woke up every hour until 22:00 after the 19:00 bedtime. Do you think this could be sign that he's ready to drop this last nap?

Yes, most likely if he cat napped that day.  Or it could be OT if he skipped his cn and had a long A til bed. We used to get nws in the evening if J was UT, but it can mean OT for some LOs.  It probably depends on what his day looked like...

hi there!! I'm soooo confused right now!! We dropped the CN and made an EBT at 6:00. He wakes up at the 45 min mark, fusses for about 10 min (kind of its mantra cry) and goes back to sleep. brief wake up at 3 and 4, but ready to start the day at 5 am!!  :o I let him play-talk for 15 min, then fuss for another 20 min before going in. When he saw me he started to scream!! We'd prefer a 6 or 7 WU...  But I can't increase his A time at the end of the day because i'm sure he can't get more. Yesterday he was so tired he was struggling to stay awake to finish his bottle.

I also have to confess that we have a real hard time trying to read my son's cues. He's verry fussy all the time as he seems to get bored so easily... The only cues I get that he's tired is eyes rubbing and he kind of act like he's ''over doing it or hyperactive''.

Do you think it's a good idea to go back to the CN and make a later BT? How long should he be awake after the CN?  ???

Also, since we started increasing his A time, both of his naps got shorter. Passing from 2 hours to sometimes less 1.5 hours. Does it means i'm keeping him up too long?

Yes, he might be getting a little bit OT.  Often LOs need a CN still every few days to stop OT building up, so that's probably what's happening here.  How long is it since he last cat napped?  You might need to do 2 naps for a day or two, then a 3 nap day, then a couple more 2 nap days before another 3 nap day, depending on how he's doing, when the naps fall etc.

I would try offering a 30 minute CN at 4.30 or 5ish for a 7pm bedtime and see how that goes.  If you have a fairly set time for the CN then you can try and AP up until 4.30pm, say, and if he's tired overall he might go for it, and if he's not then he'll skip it and you can do an EBT instead.  That way he can self regulate and you'll probably find that some days he's cat napping and others he isn't according to how tired he is, rather than trying to plan the number of days he goes between cat naps.

And don't worry about not being able to read your LOs cues - my two were really hard to read as babies as well!  Sometimes you just have to go by A rimes and nap lengths and make your best guess :)  The good news is that my two got much easier to read as toddlers...
