Short night?
« on: July 04, 2015, 09:42:14 am »
Heloo, my DS is 9,5 months old and i have a question. He has A time 4h. So:
Wu at 7
S 11-12.30
S 17.00-17.45
NS 21.00
I am worried that his nigh is just 10h long, but i cant put him down for his catnap before he is awake for 4h. I would like him to sleep until 8h, because we are on holidays and i have another 3y old DD and we always have to go back to our house at 10.30 so he can nap. But he is still too young for just one sleep. He is not ceanky in the morning or any part of the day. He falls a sleep mostly by himself, wu at night usually twice to eat( i still bf). I would also like to stop bf at night but i dont know how he will fall asleep when he wu. I think he is still hungry at night, because he eats for whole 10 min. He eats all the meals, bf is just at night.
 Thank you!

Hi honey! Could you please post also your feeding routine? Until 1yo they should get the minimum of 18-20oz of milk (depending on country, in some they advise even more). So if he doesn't drink milk during day, it's very normal that he wakes for milk at night.

Re sleep I would definitely try to start this second nap earlier. Even 4:30 will be much better. And I would cap this nap at 20-30min at that age to prevent him refusing BT. My reco would to cap at 5:00 the latest and go for 7/7:30 bt. It would be great if you can APOP a nap at 4:00 instead of 4:30 but still cap at 30min and go for 7/7:30 BT.

8.00 milk+cereals
10.30 fruit+cereals or joghurt
13.30 lunch ( meat, veggie, potatoe/rice)
16.00 fruit+cereals or joghurt
18.00 small snack
20.00 dinner (milk+cereals)
20.45 bf before sleeping

Do you think he should get more milk during the day? He gets app 400 ml (13-14 oz) with cereals and yoghurt, maybe i shoul offer one bf during the afternoon? Or when it would be the best? He doesnt have a bottle, so bf is the only option. Should i offer bf as another meal/snack or should i replace one snack with bf?

In general 4xBF session would be a total minimum in my opinion at that age to make sure he gets what he needs. And he needs to be hungry for them so they cannot be added on top of your current  scheme as it's already very busy:).

If you would like to change the best option at that age would be in my opinion
- separating feeds to make sure he is hungry
- offering milk before solids
- I wouldn't offer snack at this age - but rather concentrate on having 4xBF + max of 3x solid meals
- when he will be 12mo at least you can slowly switch off milk feeds during day and change to solid meals, but many ladies keep 3-4BF sessions even after 1yo

Your sample feeding plan could look like:
7am milk/ BF
8am breakfast/ cereal+milk+fruits
10:30 milk/ BF
NAP 11:00-12:30
12:30 solid lunch /meat+veggie/
3:00/3:30 milk
NAP 4:00-4:30
5pm dinner /carbohydrate meal + veggie/
7pm milk

You can push the routine back or forth if you need.

What milk do you give him with the solid foods? At this age (under 1yo) only Breast milk or formula have the balance of nutrients he needs so other milk such as cow's milk does not count when looking at his daily totals.

I would add in BFs when he wakes up in the morning and after each nap as well as at BT. I wouldn't drop any NFs yet until you are feeding at least 3-4 times in the day again.

Have a look at some sample routines. Routines for Solids and Bottles/BF's 6-12months
