9 week old refusing to settle using shhh, shhh, pat
« on: August 24, 2015, 10:30:39 am »
Hello there. I am desperate for some help and advice please as I am at my wits end. I tried to start shhh pat with my 9 week old a fortnight ago as I am having huge problems getting him to nap. I previously did it with my 6 year old which worked for her. Basically, if I miss the window to get him down to nap after his activity, he immediately becomes overtired and it can take me up to 3 hours to get him down by which point he is due his next feed. The 'window' is tiny and he can he absolutely happy, show no.signs of tiredness then suddenly start his little cough and cry.

I have been trying to calm him then put him down using shhh shhh pat but he never calms down enough for it to work properly. I end up rocking him to calm him while doing shhh and pat but as soon as I put him down he is hysterical. I have tried winding down after play and making activity time shorter so I think I can catch him in time but nothing works. How do I proceed from here as I can't settle him to get him down to even start the technique properly. If I put him down to nap any earlier then he will only he awake for about 30mins after he's woken up.....help!!!!!!!!

No shh method is working, no rocking, no winding.
I am disperate. Did you find any method to make him sleep?
During night nap I don'T have anu problem, but during the day is a nightmare.
Until now everything went perfect according to the book.

Please help.

Hello

I had exactly the same problem with my LO when she was 8 weeks. I remember this because I also wrote a post regarding the same issue. My LO's sleep went really bad from week 8 and it lasted for about one week.

Also the evening fussiness is known to peaks around 8 weeks and gradually goes away by 12 weeks.

Hope it helps, you are not alone in this!

Best,

It sounds like your really trying to nail down that magic window and sometimes it can be really difficult.  If Shh-Pat isn't working for you, I would suggest looking into Happiest Baby on the Block, by Harvey Karp.  His methods are in line with Tracy's and his technique is very similar, just a slightly different positioning.  It worked like a charm for my DS1.  His book is recommended in our resources section but I would either get his DVD from the library, buy it on line or search him on Youtube.
For more specific advice, it would be great to see your EASY and then we can try to help you out.

Hello & hugs!!
I'm so sorry we are in the same boat: ( but I'm also relieved that I'm not alone.
My  8 week old stopped napping 1.5 weeks ago. It started gradually, from just one short nap, until he would not nap at all!!! He took only  three 40 min naps today.  Now even my breast or swing do not work! Scary ...
Please tell me you have found a solution or that it'll pass by the end of the week!!
