Help with weaning and scheduling for 13 mo
« on: December 23, 2015, 12:15:18 pm »
I am gradually weaning my 13 mo and need some help figuring out my next step. I want to try to keep my supply up so that I can nurse morning and night. I am home on vacation from work until Jan 4. Here is our current schedule:
6:15 wake and nurse
8:00- breakfast
9:15-10:15- nap
10:15- nurse
11:45- lunch
1:15- I used to nurse at this time as a top off feed on the weekends but during the work week he gets a bottle so I recently started giving 3 oz cows milk in a cup
3:30- nurse
5:00- dinner
6:45- nurse and bed; sleeps through the night

I teach and couldn't really pick my times to pump. I know it's best to pump when baby has milk but it doesn't work out that way for us, so my weekday and weekend times are different.  I was pumping at 8:15 and 11:30. I dropped the 8:15 pumping about 3 weeks ago and did fine.

So which feeding do you suggest I drop next? 10:15 or 3:30?
Also, do you think I need to tweak his eating schedule as I do this to be more of a 3 meals a day plus snacks? Any suggestions on how to do that? Thanks!!

Hi there! Sorry your post got missed - holiday craziness around here!

Being that he is over a year I would just replace those two feeds with snacks and possibly milk to drink, is he on one nap or two? I was never successful at pumping so no advice there!

Hello, I don't think it makes much difference which feed you drop first. Which would be convenient to you? I would just replace with a  snack as Heidi says.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up dropping the 10:15 feeding and am giving him a snack with 3 oz milk. He currently is on the following schedule:
6:15-nurse
8- breakfast
9:15-10-15- nap
10:15- snack and 3 oz milk
11:45- lunch
1:15- 3 oz milk
1:30-3:30- nap
3:30- nurse
5:00-dinner
6:45- nurse and bedtime

Is he getting enough milk? His doctor said he is ready to be on a 3 meals a day with milk and 2 snacks. I tried giving him a cup of milk with lunch the other day and he didn't drink very much. It seemed like a lot of food and milk for him all at once.

I will probably wait another week or so before dropping the 3:30 feed. I am guessing I would also do a snack at that time as well.

After 1 year the milk takes a bit of a backseat to solid food in the diet. I think the recs here (for cows milk I mean) is 2 cups a day (I think that is 16 oz?) but he may well be getting plenty just from bm. I did milk morning and night with all 3 kids and did water otherwise.

Calcium doesn't just have to come from the milk - do you include yogurts and cheese? Also milk cooked into things (cheese sauce, porridge etc) or poured over cereal count  :)
