Early waking 10mo
« on: July 08, 2017, 06:43:40 am »
I'm hoping someone has some suggestions for what I can try... my 10mo has started EW again. He did this 1.5months ago (waking at 6 which gradually crept toward 5am!) so I was putting him to bed earlier to make sure he got enough sleep. This didn't help but I pushed his whole routine forward an hour and that seemed to help for a while but now it started again'  :-[

His routine recently is

WU 5.45-6am
A 4hr 15 (I try to stretch this as close to 10.30 as I can)
S 10.15-11.30 (1hr15)

E 11.30
A 3hr30 (this is usually apop and shorter Atime so I can still have a reasonable BT)
S 15.00-15.45

E 15.45
A 4hr15-4hr30
BT 20.00-20.15

If he's waking up at 6, that's not enough nightsleep, he was averaging 11 hours previously.

Prior to this, he used to wake around 5.30 every day, id give him a bottle with some water, he'd drink it and fall asleep again until 7 which was ideal WU time.

What should I try? If I push the morning Atime any further then I won't be able to fit in the 2nd nap and get him to bed by 8pm...

You could try reversing the A times before and after his pm nap. Sometimes when they're shifting sleep needs, they can go to bed fine with a shorter A to bed, given the A times and activity themselves through the day are substantial.

something close to:
WU
NAP1 10:15-11:30 (keep this time, or even 10:00 while he's waking so early)
NAP2 3:30-4:15
BT 8:00

If he's showing tired signs, possibly shortening his morning nap, then keep it at 10:00 or so to curb OT. Then move it forward as he wakes later, hopefully!!!

Thanks for your response, ginger428.

He's been better the last few days, he wakes between 5-6am and goes back down with a bottle of water until 6.30-7. Which is better 👍🏽

Re: swapping the Atimes, he did used to have a short final Atime but he randomly started to need a longer Atime. Now, he doesn't settle any earlier than 4hr15 before BT, even though the 2nd nap is only30mins. I'm not sure why?

now I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of that one waking. I've considered W2S but he doesn't wake at the same time so I'm not sure if that would work? Sometimes he can wake as early as 4.45.

I think he's needing more A before bed bc his pm nap is probably earlier than he is ready for... after 3.5. So he needs more activity and just a tad UT for bed.

You can try W2S at 4:30, even if he wakes at 5-6...do it every so gently so that you don't cause a full arousal, which could backfire.

But how are things currently?

Well everything is up in the air bc he's not well at the moment, he has a cough and cold so he's waking up multiple times at night. He's settling back down with water or cuddles but it's like having a newborn again!

I'm hoping that once he starts feeling better, I'll implement what you s- longer 2nd A &a try W2S at 4.30. If he continues to wake around 7am then I'll try this routine...

WU 7
1st A 4hr
Nap 11.00-12.30
2nd A 3.5hr
Nap 4.00-4.30
BT 8.00-8.30
