Wake to sleep for 5.00 am starts
« on: May 23, 2006, 14:37:07 pm »
Hi

My DS wakes consistently between 4.45-5.15 am and I struggle to settle him back to sleep so I now let him chatter/cruise/play in his cot until 6.00 am but then he's tired as soon as he gets up!  Has anybody successfully tried the Wake to Sleep method to overcome the early wake-ups?

I have, since posting previously, moved his morning nap later and his afternoon nap later (so he has an hour in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon) and he goes to bed easily at 7.00 pm.

Thanks in advance.
Sue

My DS is just over 8 months old.  His routine is as follows:

6.00   Milk & breakfast
9.00   Nap (for 45mins to 1 1/4 hours max)
10.30 Milk
12.00 Lunch
1.00 or 1.30 Nap (for 1 to 1 1/2 hours)
3.00 Milk
5.00 Dinner
6.30 Bath & milk
7.00 Bed

Sometimes the first nap is at 8.30ish if he's been awake from about 4.45 - I just can't keep awake as he's so overtired!

Thanks in advance.

I tired w2sleep for a 5:30am wake-up and failed. my son is 16weeks old. I went in to room at 4:30am and my son seemed to be in a deep sleep--I gently stroked his stomach and he stirred slightly but then he fully awoke and screamed a few minutes later. I had to do pu/pd for over 1hour to get him back to sleep. I have used w2sleep for a habitual 4am waking and it worked. Somehow, I think that the quality/type of sleep is different after 4am. I find after 4am his sleep is inconsistent.

it could be that your lo is overtired before bed. when your lo has an early wake up day - try putting him to bed earlier at night - if need be at 6 pm so he can 'catch' up on lost sleep then rather than with an earlier nap in the am kwim? lo will keep waking early if you reinforce early napping this way...so if he wakes up at say 5am - give him his nap when he is tired - not overtired which you have been doing - but i wouldn't let that sleep be too long - no longer than an hr - then go through your routine for the day - as i see on your routine - if lo wakes from the second nap at 2pm - til 7pm is a very long stretch and lo could be getting overtired - so i suggest an earlier sleep time -which willhopefully help solve the earlier wake up time if he isn't overtired when he going to bed for the night. hopefully this will help...keep us posted!
