Rice cereal and diaper rash!!!!!! Please help
« on: October 15, 2005, 23:09:30 pm »
Hi,

I just started my little boy on rice cereal this week.

The first day,..just a couple of baby spoons full in the AM only.
The second day,...the same......

The third day I was going to do morning and night when I realized that he was getting a bad diaper rash....it has now progressed to a yeast infection....and I am using nystatin on his bum.

Lately...before starting the rice cereal, I have noticed that his bowel movements have increased in frequency.   I try my best to clean his sensitive bum right away...but am not always successful--he poops alot through the night--but also sleeps through now too!!

The consistency of his poop is the same....as always...with the rice cereal...(not runny etc)....but I am wondering,..how do you know if this is just due to introducing a new food...or an allergy--very rare for rice cereal...but I was on Nutramigen as a baby due to allergies and now so is he.

I am desperate for any help....does any have any opinions.

Has this happened to anyone else...what did you do?  Did you stop for a few weeks..and try again?  I am not going to give him cereal until his bum clears up...and it seems to be pretty stubborn....

Thanks in advance for the help...I really appreciate all input!!

Marylou

Marylou. It is often hard to tell whether it's just down to introducing a new food or if there is an intolerance to deal with (an allergy will generally display further symptoms).

I think you're doing the best thing by cutting out the cereal and waiting a little longer. If the cereal still doesn't agree then skip it and try something like pear or carrot instead.

My niece had some sensitivity to grains when she first started solids. SIL ended up skipping grains and going straight for mild fruits and veggies, like avocado, sweet potato, bananas, or pears. She outgrew it eventually, and now (at 18 mo) she can eat grains with no problem. Like Sara said, it may be best to give solids a rest until the rash clears up, then try something else. HTH!
