What am I to do?HELP!!
« on: December 12, 2005, 20:32:32 pm »
I am on the verge of tears as I write this....
I can't et my almost one year old to take a cup. or a bottle. a straw or anything else but me. I have been trying for almost 2 months to transition her. I was really wanting to have her weaned by the age of one, I am feeling really tied down to the whole breastfeeding thing. My last two are really close together so I feel like I have been sitting for 20 minutes to feed for the last 2 years.
Please someone give me an idea I am on the verge of going cold turkey but then you risk lack of liquids. I just don't knw what to do  ok now I am crying. what should I do???
I am at my wits end....on top of all this she won't eat well anymore either. I have tried making her fod buying it, have tried table food, the only thing she is happy with is yellow veggies and fruits. loves ritz crackers.
what am I to do?
Angie

Hi

I'm sorry I don't really have much advice - just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I'm trying to teach my 9 month old to drink (from anything!) and I'm not having any luck at all. She has never been a great eater - but now it seems to be getting dangerous. We live in Australia and during our very hot days she almost didn't eat or drink. I've tried lots of things and I guess I'll just have to keep trying. I know it's not easy - but try to keep it light and fun. Just think - she won't be 16 and still coming to see you for a drink - so she will get there. Keep your chin up and just try again now and then. I'm sure I haven't helped - but you are not alone hon. Good luck

I had a hard time getting my dd to drink from a sippy cup but I just kept trying and she eventually got the hang of it. I am sure you have tried everything but I used to take the valve out and let the fluid flow by itself until she worked out what she had to do. One thing you could try is the Pigeon Peristaltic teats. They are really close to a real nipple. Get the fastest flowing sort - "Y" Cut. If you can get your lo to take that for a while, you can then try the faster flowing variety called the Oral Development Nipple and there is also an Oral Development Spout for a sippy cup. Also try to get someone else to bottle feed your lo and try different milk temperatures. My SIL's ds will only take a bottle if the milk is quite hot. Are you trying with your breastmilk in the bottle or formula?

With the food, my dd will rarely eat anything unless it's finger food. Once she has given herself a few mouthfuls of finger food, I find I can then spoon feed her a few mouthfuls of other foods but she doesn't eat much at all.

Best of luck with it all!

Angie, I would also try posting this on the breastfeeding boards and see if they have any suggestions.  And I think that the not eating well is a stage that all babies go thru.  THey are exerting their independence, and the more it proves to frustrate you, the more she will continue to do it.  As long as she is gaining or not losing weight and her doctor is satisfied then I wouldn't worry about lack of nutrition.  Before going cold turkey on the breastfeeding, I would also ask the doctor what they recommend is an appropriate amount of time before concerns about lack of liquids.  Ie: How long to wait it out before you either must give in, or supplement her in some fashion.  I wish you the very best of luck, as you seem to have a very independent little one.  Hang in there though, and try to keep your head.  Don't fight a battle with your toddler, decide a course of action and stick with it!  Keep posting for support.

OK, I feel better today. Aftr yesterday I have decided that I ruined the whole day for me and my DD. Very stressful for both of us and my other 2 didn't have much fun either. anyhow I am going to give her a break from the cup idea. At least for another week and then maybe try again. I would much rather take the time feeding her for 10 minutes 4x's a day than to EVER go through what I did yesterday. I don't want the weaning process to be traumatic for both of us especially since she is my last baby.
I REALLY appreciate all of your thoughts and will try out the ideas in a week or so. Thanks, Angie
