Honey and Milk question
« on: December 09, 2005, 14:57:58 pm »
Does anyone know if its ok to feed babies foods with honey in them? I bought DS some waffles and just noticed that on the box it says they have honey in them, do you only have to stay away from raw honey till 1yr?
Also, does the same hold true for milk in products, do they have to have whole milk in them (like cheese or other types of dairy products) or is any type of milk ok and does the whole milk rule only hold true for drinking after 1 yr? Thanks

I think you are ok with either as long as they are cooked.  The issue with honey is raw honey can contain salmonella (?).  I think the milk protein in baked foods like waffles is such a small amount it is minimal, but you may want to double check on that.

I would still keep it in moderation. Honey in and of itself is only dangerous if consumed on a regular basis. My DD got a hold of a bite of sisters waffle with real honey on it, I asked the Doc and that is what he told me.

Oh I am not saying to give honey now, but the danger isn't as dangerous as we are made to think unless they have it on a weekly basis.

I wouldnot, the danger is botulism which can be a very serious infection. Here in England it is not allowed until babies area year old. There are so few things you have to hold off on I really would make honey one of them.

True botulism is VERY dangerous, I would still keep it to a minimum. The waffle will have VERY LITTLE REAL honey on it but maybe you should check with YOUR dr. I still don't think it would hurt but for your own peace of mind I would make a quick phonecall.

That's right, the danger with honey is botulism.  I wouldn't give it or products with it until one year.

As for milk products, I introduced yogurt and cheese at about 9 months (if you have a family history of food allergies, you should wait for the full year).  The problem with those is possible allergies.  Both yogurt and cheese have far less lactose than milk, so they are not so much a problem for lactose intolerance.  But actually, the real danger with milk before 1 year is that it is not an appropriate main food for little humans, and the medical establishment fears that you may be tempted to use it instead of breastmilk or formula, which can result in anemia (something about how the baby's body breaks milk down, or something.  So a little whole milk in something is probably not a problem once in awhile as long as there are no food allergies in your family.

I started  milk products at six months; there is no history of allergies in the family.
