do bf baby's ever sleep longer stretches?
« on: January 18, 2006, 03:25:04 am »
Now don't get me wrong.  I am DEFINITELY not complaining as ds is doing great with going about 2 1/2 to 3 hours between feeds.  I've just always heard that bf baby's won't sleep through the night since breastmilk is digested to quickly.  Now I'm not wanting him to sleep through anytime soon as he needs his calories still, but I'm just wondering if that's a myth or fact that bf baby's don't ever sleep through until they're weaned.  Dd was formula fed from around 2 months and started sleeping through at 4 months so we were very lucky.  I'm just wondering if there's any chance of ds sleeping through at a young age or if I shouldn't expect it until he's eating solids or on formula.  What did your babies do?

LOL--my bf baby still doesn't sleep through most nights and she was weaned almsot 5 months ago!  :P

That is not really true.  I know plenty of bf babies who did start to sleep through by 3 or 4 months.  And even with how awful ours has been, at 2 months, we were getting 7 to 8 hour stretches (she just regressed greatly after that :? ).

Good luck!  And don't give up until you see how your little guy is going to be!

Nathan slept through from dreamfeed (10pm) until 7am at 11wks old and then 12hrs straight at 7mths.  Danielle however has only just been sleeping through consistently 12hrs at 9mths (but did sleep through for a week at 12wks and again at 5mths - seems growth spurts upset her sleeping through and she's never been a big eater).  The df didn't work with her though, so I let nature take it's course with her.

I think it really depends on baby. Some breastfed babies sleep through at an early age of 6 weeks and some don't till they are a year old or older. My dd has been a bad sleeper and still is. It is her temperament, she is a spirited one, that is getting in a way, she would rather be tired but awake. From an early age she prefered to be as much up as possible thus the rule that a newborn needs to sleep most of the time didn't apply to her. Even now as a toddler she sleeps much less than she is supposed to .
So if your little guy is an easy, placid baby he may surprize you sooner than you think.

It is possible!!!  My little guy started sleeping 10 hour stretches at 6 weeks of age!!!!!  I coudln't believe it at the time really!!!  He then continued to sleep through the night until he hit 7 months of age.  Now every week I have 2-3 nights with 2 or more night wakings.  I miss months 2-6 where I had uninterupted sleep but I guess I can't complain  :)

When he was only 8 weeks or so he was eating every 2.5- 3hrs hours during the day and I cluster fed at night (5, 7, & 9pm) to help him get through the night.  I never did the dream feed but DS wasn't going to bed until 9:30 or so.  He was born at 8lbs 13 oz so he was a big boy to start with.  I don't know if that had anything to do with it??

I'm sorry some of you are still struggling, but it's good to know that it's not a universal fact that bf babies don't sleep as long.  That's definitely reassuring. Sounds like it's just the same as bottle fed babies - depends on the baby!   :D   Last night he did two 4 hour stretches so I was VERY exciting about that though I know it could just be a fluke.  It was nice to get the extra sleep.

Max slept 8 hr stretches from 6 weeks and 12 hr stretches from week 8. It didn't last, but he could do it more nights than not.

Katie slept through (7:30-7:30) pretty consistently from about 12 weeks (with a dreamfeed around 11).  So YES, it is entirely possible.  I loved those 4 hour stretches in the beginning.  Makes you feel like a whole new person  :D

Peter started sleeping for 7-8 hours at around 8 weeks and by three months was up to 11-12 hours which he still continues.

My DS is exclusively breastfed and has been going 12 hours at night without a feed for the past month or so (he is five months now).  He is a very big baby but just doesn't seem to be motivated by food.  He still wakes up and resettles himself.  But last night he randomly woke for a feed at midnight and five.  I feel a growth spurt coming on...

My ds is also bf and has been sleeping 12 hour streches since he was 2 months old.He also sleeps 2 naps of 2 hours each during the day. Not only that but he dropped the dreamfeed at 2 1/2 months, it totally interrupted his nighttime sleep. So personally I think that the ideal of "formula helps them sleep through the night" is a bunch of hoooey!  He's an average size baby and feeds every 4 hours with 2-3 oz of solids in between.  I have read that they sleep through the night when they are developmentally ready, and that is different for every child.

Hang in there, he'll sleep through the night before you know it! ;)

Dd1 started consistently sleeping thru at around 4 months (7pm-7am with a 10pm DF, and I dropped the DF at 7 months).  We never had any set backs until she was around 15m, but that was probably due to an overseas trip.  Dd2 (4m yesterday) seems to be doing the same thing (last night she slept from 7pm - 6am with a 10pm DF).  The early morning feed seemed to be getting later and later, the night before last it was at 4.40am.  Both my daughters were/are not big, with my dd2 being smaller than dd1.  A friend's (large) baby was sleeping til at least 5am (from 10.30pm ish) from 6 wks.  I know she was doing 12 hr stretches before 3m.  She was also only feeding 4hrly pretty much from the start!!

So yes, all babies are different.

i just wanted to add that maybe our lo's were getting too much day sleep.  it seems that i have cut back on a nap..or if two short naps then and only then have i been giving the catnap and extended A time between naps.  it seems to be working as now she is just waking up for 1 feeding and just stirring a bit when she woke up at other times...i think this 1 feeding MAY be out of habit but we will try and work with that.
