I'm going to embaress myself big time
« on: December 26, 2005, 12:26:58 pm »

dd is 4.5 months and I'm ready to wean her.  She's well over 18lb and has gone to wking in the night and draining bottle after bottle.

Anyway, my question is WHAT IS PUREEING??  I know that this post is going to make me look really crap but in my defence can I say that before I entered the world of babydom I worked v.long hours and we ate out loads, did takeaways and I loved my microwave.  I'm a rubbish cook in other words so pureeing means nowt to me!

My hv has given me loads of recipes which seem idiotproof. ie carott puree: wash, peel and boil for 10-15 mins, keep back the cooking water and puree till you have achieved the correct consistency.  I'm guessing I have to get a blender, stick carrots in it put in a bit of the cooking water and switch it on till it's mushy, then pour it into ice cube trays.  Is that it?  Is that pureeing?

Goodness me, life was so much easier when I was a career girl!!

Please can someone post back - I can't keep giving Mia babyrice for ever more.

Just a thought if you want to make life a wee bit easier...we have these ready made baby cubes no artificial anything - just pureed vegies that you heat and serve. You get them in the freezer section here. I am SURE you would have them over there too. We are usually the last developed country to get ANYTHING!

Just for info - if you make your own carrots, DO NOT keep the cooking water when pureeing!!! Carrots are one of a few veggies that have nitrites in them as a natural by-product of growing, and the cooking water will have them too. Nitrites do something with oxygen in baby's bloodstream and before what, 6 months (someone jump in here and help my memory) not all babies can handle it.

Since commercial carrots by law have to have a low amount of nitrites, that's one case in which the store-bought may be safer, unless you use fresh water to puree the carrots.

But yes, pureeing just means process the food till it's basically pudding consistency. And you can also use EBM or formula to add liquid for pureeing, and add cereal if it's too runny.

Hi Louise

Puree means that you will cook the fruit / veg.  The using a blender (I love my stick blender), whizz until completely smooth and there are no lumps.  (if you are unsure, you could buy some commercially available purees to get the idea first)  I particularly liked the heinz 'simple vegetable' or 'simply fruit' ranges as they keep to just one or two veg mixed.  I still buy the pots of organix fruit purees to add to DS porridge in the mornings when i can't be bothered to peel fruit first thing)

I Loved cooking for Matthew so if you need help / ideas for how to introduce veg / cooking help etc then please feel free to send me a private message and I will help you.

I found some large rubbery icecube trays in cargo which were great for freezing the purees in and then once frozen I transferred the  cubes into freezer bags.  (writing on what veg / fruit it was and when i made them).

I'll stop now as I don't want to overload you with info, but please get in touch if you need to.

Alex

Hi there, what you need is:

A hand blender (a Tesco value one is £5)
Veggies/fruit
Ice cube trays
Freezer bags

Cook the veggies/fruit (have you got a steamer? - I found that the easiest option). Put them into a bowl, whizz them up with the hand blender until smooth, then spoon into the ice cube trays. Put the ice cube trays in the freezer until frozen, then transfer to freezer bags. Label and date freezer bags. At this age, each cube will be roughly a portion of food. Take one out into a clean bowl to defrost in the fridge overnight and jobs a good'n! :D
Caroline :)
