Please help with teaching how to sleep independently
« on: January 01, 2006, 14:44:27 pm »
Hi there,

I have an 8 month old son whom has only slept through the night once. We were doing really good to keep him on a routine, however, that all flew out the window when Daddy went out of town for three weeks. Since then (3 months ago), my son wakes up about an hour after we put him down the first time, then every 2-3 hours thereafter. He always wants to sleep at night, but only as long as he has me as his human pacifier. We have never taught him to fall asleep on his own because I've only been told to do that, you have to Ferberize. He was a NICU baby, and all I wanted to do was hold him when he came home. I have really learned a lot by reading Tracy's book, but I'm not sure what to do when he wakes up during the night and wants to nurse. He will go in his crib for naps and sleep, but not while awake. I pick him up and soothe him, then put him back down, and he gets worse everytime. He WILL NOT take a paci, or even a bottle from Dad at night. In fact, if he sees Dad come in the room, he screams harder. I'm starting EASY, and I'm really going to try to learn how to cue in on his voices, but what do I do if he just won't stop crying at night? Have we waited too long to fix this?

hi there,

no, it's not too late yet.  i don't think it ever is, but the strategy changes.  by 8 months your best bet is pick up/put down (PU/PD)  we have an entire forum devoted to this should you have more questions about the technique.  in the meantime, here are some helpful things to read regarding this:

this interview is super long, but VERY helpful & detailed

this will also help you get to the pu/pd board

Thank you Jaime,

I feel like things are starting to work a little smoother around here. Our son took two 1 1/2 hour naps today for the first time. I've been jotting everything down in a log and really observing him. He seems a lot happier. Tonight we are going to try the pu/pd method so I'm going to read the interview. Thank you for the encouragement. Anything else you can add is very appreciated!
