Are 30 min. naps too much or too little 'A' time?
« on: November 30, 2005, 19:16:10 pm »
My ds is now 6 1/2 mos. old and I previously posted my frustrations with his recent 30 min. naps.  In the past its always meant he was overtired overstimulated.  He's been doing this for 10 days now and I'm still not sure what to do.

His A time is 2 hours which I just started (late I know) about 2 weeks ago.  He seemed to do fine with it at first but then these 30 mins. naps appeared.  45 min. is pretty typical in the past.

Someone suggested maybe there's still not enough A time.   What has been others experience.  He had a good sleep last night but still was cranky an hour after waking which could have been something else  I don't know.  I kept him up 2 hours.  Everything low key.  Did a windown as usual but still the 30 min. and there is no getting him back to sleep.  Should I keep what I'm doing and hope he snaps out of it?

Hi, sorry i didn't see your post until today.

Hum, from 45 to 30...normally i would say that is too much A time, but in this case i don't think it is.  2.-3hrs of A time is normal for your LOs age.  Why the 30mins?  Taylor's mom just wrote this and i think it fits:
infants start to come out of deep sleep at 30 minutes, so some may wake up right when they start to come out of deep sleep .

I would keep at extending his A time and even dare to say extend it a bit more.  2.15hr was the magic no for us at this age.

I know how frustrating this is, but hang in there it does get better!

I agree with Michelle.  I think he could go a little longer, BUT, very important to keep that extra A time very mellow.  If you can, take a walk outside or around the house and show him family pictures.  sit in his room and read a mellow story.  Anythign to keep him up but not really add any extra stimulatio KWIM?

let us know how you're doing

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've been keeping him up for 2 hr. 20 min. which seems to work most of the time.  Lately though he either does the 30 min. nap or and hour and 15 which suggests he's waking up right after a deep sleep in the second sleep cycle?

Correct -

How often is the 30min nap?

If just occasionally, then i would go with it and get about your day.

If very often, I would suggest pushing the A time a bit more - the orginal extension was almost a month ago - KWIM?
