Getting a bit frustrated with nap issue!
« on: February 15, 2006, 21:53:51 pm »
Help!  My baby was doing so great for the first 5 days of EASY training and now he's just not cooperating!  I can't get him to nap well anymore.  When we first started, he was taking naps to a point where I had to wake him up because he was sleeping close to 2 hours.  Now, he's up every 15-20 minutes and doesn't get a good nap.  Any advice or suggestions?!  I don't want to start accidental parenting but at the same time, he's got to get some sleep or he'll be over tired!

Hi, sorry you are having trouble.  We can try to help, but need a bit more info:

1) what is dc routine?
2) what is dc windown?
3) what do you do after the short nap?

Hopefully we can help sort this out.

We're not on a strict schedule as that doesn't work for us but here's what we did this past Monday.  I write down each day until we've got the EASY thing down.  (Tuesday is when he started the every 15 minute wake up for his nap):

8:00 - E
8:30 - A
9:15 - S  (he can't stay up for longer in the AM)
10:30 - E
11:00 - A
12:15 - S
1:50 - E
2:15 - A
3:30 - S
5:15 - E
5:30 - A
6:30 - S
7:15 - E
7:30 - A
8:00 - S

Our wind down routine is consistent.  We go in his room, I turn down the blinds and get him swaddled.  I sit with him upright in a chair for about 5 mintues (or until he's calm and has a more steady, slow breathing) and typically sing/hum to him.  Once he's in a calm state but still awake, I place him in his crib and stand by for a few minutes to make sure he's going to zone out and not wake himself.  Once I see he's falling asleep, I leave the room.  I hear nothing from him at all for about 15 minutes and then he starts fussing.  When I go in his room, once he sees me, he gets more upset so I pick him up and do shh/pat until he's calmed down.  At that time, the cycle starts over again.  I keep him in his room/crib for the duration of what his nap should be.  (at least 1.5 hrs)  Sometimes he'll actually get to sleep and sometimes, he doesn't.

What am I doing/not doing??

Hello,

How are you getting on?

I might be wrong, but it sounds from your post like your lo has got into the cycle of being overtired.

You say you are not on a strict schedule - we've never done this either, but it does mean you have to be more careful with his cues. Are you waiting for his sleepy cues before starting the winddown, or are you going by the clock? I would suggest for the next few days beginning his winddown a little earlier than usual, and keeping his A time low-key. This is not supposed to be a permanent tweak, just a giving him a chance to catch up, then you can gradually extend A times again.

HTH, let us know how you get on
Caroline :)
