Food refusal = not enough calories
« on: January 30, 2006, 00:42:18 am »
Red started off really well with solids, he then had a growth spurt and ate like a champ, he just loved it! But for the last week he has been refusing most solids from off of a spoon. It is driving me mad, he just shuts his lips real tight and grunts/ moans at me until i stop offering ::) I have tried the old tricks - distracting with TV, Daddy, finger foods, getting him to smile etc, and then trying to slip the food in, but it only works a couple times then we're back to square one.

Now i'm not one for stressing about what my children eat, i know that if they are not hungry they won't eat. But he is having horrendous night wakings, and i think they may be down to hunger caused by the lack of calories taken in throughout the day. Has anyone else gone through this, and is it just a phase? Or is he destined to be one of those children who graduates straight onto finger foods?

(He had cheese on toast for lunch, at 7 months old - honestly!!)

Ugh! That's so frustrating, isn't it? You said you'd tried finger foods...will he take them from your fingers at all? What foods is he still willing to eat? Maybe we can help you find some creative ways to get food into him if we know what he WILL eat!

Thanks Melissa!

He is actually quite adept and grasping food and self feeding. He grabs stuff when offered and also can pick up big things from the highchair tray. Today i offered him some pasta spirals, chunks of cheese and some cooked soft veggies (brocolli and carrots) and he loved it. He was so pleased with himself that i managed to feed him some yoghurt and fruit afterwards!! So i suppose i need some ideas for food that a 7 month old can eat that he could feed himself!! We have no family allergies and i am not holding back on any foods for that reason. He has tried so far:

most fruits and veggies
pasta
Cheese
bread and toast

thanks x

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem with my DS.  He's almost 10 months and refuses to eat. Sometimes he'll eat it, especially if it's a pasta dish in a tomato sauce.  He will eat finger foods sometimes, but seems to get bored with them, so I have to break the food up into smaller pieces and somehow try and get them in his mouth.  I try and vary his food, but he seems to refuse them anyway.   He never refuses yoghurt!!

Help!!

hi,
I just posted a reply to "my baby won't eat solids anymore" to do with this, and how my baby was when he went though this, during this time he also had horrible night wakings.  I won't repeat it all but you can check that one if you would like. :)
hope it will help a bit

I feel for you, I just logged on for the same reason, my 10mos old love is doing the same thing, won't eat a thing after a bite or two.  She's been doing it for about 2 weeks now.  However, she's not waking up during the night (anymore than normal, I should add).  Are you worrying as much as I am?  I am super stressing out about this, because mine isn't putting on any pounds.  I'll be watching your post to see if anyone has any good suggestions for this.  Good luck!  I hope he starts eating soon for you!  Have a nice week - Melissa
