weaning?
« on: February 18, 2006, 01:45:16 am »
Hi. My baby is over 8 months and I am still breastfeeding, but she is sparactic about it. It's an on/off/on thing. She doesn't seem to want to settle in anymore and feed, could this be a sign of her weaning herself off? :-\

Usually at that age they don't wean but are distracted, go on nursing strikes, are too busy to actually sit and nurse. Is you lo crawling and exploring or learning new skills? It is not uncommon to refuse breast, especially around 8 months, many babies go through this phase. If you want to continue nursing her, don't get too upset about this, it is not personal. You need to keep it casual, keep offering and when she doesn't want to nurse, pump to keep your supply up. It usually passes within a week or two, sometimes three, that's why it is important to pump not to lose your supply during that time. You can try to offer when she is sleepy or sleeping or darken her room so she is not too distracted with what is going on around the house.

You can also check that website for more info: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/back-to-breast.html, scroll down to the bottom of the page for nursing strikes.

I too have heard babies will not self wean this early -

Drink lots of water and pump regularly when she is not nursing and keep offering it often!

Self-weaning occasionally happens from 12 months but even that is considered early. She could be getting faster or just enjoying the world too much! Good advice from annamum. Good luck.

It is very rare for a baby to self wean at such a young age, it sounds to me like she is just having problem with her attention span more then anything else. My DS is a terrible nurser in the day but most nights when he has his DF he eats really well and then again when it is quiet and he is sleepy in the morning. This kind of problem happens for most mums when their baby's become more mobile and would rather be playing than eating. Also she may well have become a more efficient eater too. Let us know how things go!  :)
