Amount of Day Sleep for a 6 month old
« on: January 26, 2006, 00:42:40 am »
My daughter is almost 6 months old and was sleping 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs in the afternoon (she has dropeed the cat nap). But over the last week her naps have only been going for 1.5hrs. She wakes up very happy so i assume she has had enough sleep. She sleeps 11.5-12hrs at night. Is this enough sleep for her during the day, every web site i have read about sleep says at this age they only need 3 hrs during the day.
Would just like to hear from others as to how much day sleep their little ones at similar ages are or were sleeping.

My LO took 1.5hr if i was lucky, usually 1.25.  You may find it will increase again when she gets more mobile and therefore burns more energy - hopefully sleep more :-)

If she is happy and sleeping well at night then everything sounds fine.

Hi Michelle,

Well i have a new problem as her pm nap has gone from 1.5 to 1 hr to 45 mins >:(
She is sleeping 1.5-2 hrs in the morning so getting up from nap between 11-11.30am.
Then lunch at 12 bottle at 1 then i have tried putting her to bed at 2.30pm then 2.15pm but no luck. I put her to bed the other day at 2.30pm and she took half an hour to fall asleep then slept for 1.5hrs.
But if i put her to bed at 3pm isn't that to long between naps? Should i try putting her to bed at 2pm perhaps? I would appreciate your advice as i am at my wits end as to what to do. I have always been able to solve my own nap problems pretty quickly as she is pretty good to put down for a sleep including her night sleep.

Hi Natasha, sorry you having nap troubles.

I looked up the A times for her age and here, is what i found:

6-8 month old
2.5 after am wake up – usually 1.5-2.0hr in length
2-3hr after end of am nap – same as above

So
7am wake
9.30 am nap – wake no later then 11am
1.00 or 2.00 pm nap – wake no later then 4pm
3.30 or 4.00 catnap (if needed) – 30/45min
7.00 – 7.30 bed

Also sleep times for 6mos:
11 + 3 1/4 (2 naps) =   14 1/2

A couple things stand out to me:

1) since she is getting a good 11.5-12hr night sleep and great am nap, she is able to go the distance between am and pm nap.  So 3hrs is probably not too long.

2) you need to think of her sleep as a whole - if she gets 12hrs at night and a 2hr am nap...she has almost used up all the sleep she needs before she even gets to pm nap.  You may want to try to keep her night sleep to no more then 11.5hr in addition to the above and see if that helps.

Sounds like she just needs a bit of tweaking of her routine and you should be back on track  ;)

Hi Michelle,

Thank you so much for your advise yesterday i put her down at 2pm and slept until 4pm and today again i put her down at 2pm and she woke at 3.45pm you were right it was just a matter of tweaking her schedule. I think i was putting her down to late so she was to overtired. I can usually handle things myself but i think i just needed some reasorance. Thanks again this website is a god send  :D

Wanted to bump this topic back up since I am working through similar issues mysef. DD will be 6 months in 9 days and I have been tweaking her routine as of late. After a week or so of short naps and overtired baby, I have tweaked her A times and her wind-down routine and back to good naps for now (knock wood). She generally wakes up herself happy after 1.25-1.5 hours in am, 1.5 hours in afternoon and 35-45 min catnap. If she's not up after 1.5 hours for the first two naps, I have been waking her.

At night, she goes to bed anywhere between 7:20-7:50, depending on previous naps, dinner time, etc. Doesn't seem to make much difference to her as long as A times don't change too much.

No matter what time she goes to bed, she is quite restless between 4-5:30 am. If she can get through this time she will generally sleep to 6:15-6:30 but sometimes it means she is up at 5:30 for the day (although I won't get her out of bed until 6am unless she's really upset).

It doesn't seem she's ready to drop the catnap yet - not until she can have A times of all 2.5 hours plus (she's currently at about 2 hours and 5-10 mins in am, 2:10-2:15 in afternoon and 2:15 before catnap. These times include wind down and then it takes her an additional 5-10 minutes in crib to fall asleep). She's also VERY active - lots of rolling, creeping, trying to crawl, squealing, kicking legs, etc. But is she getting too much total day sleep and would she sleep more restfully/longer in morning if I cut it back slightly? For example, instead of letting her get about 3.5 hours of day sleep (sometimes a bit more) should I cut it to just 3 total and maybe make her first nap just one hour, second nap 1.5 and then catnap of 30 minutes? And then bedtime no later than 7:30?

Trying to find good balance. Would love if she could get 11 hours at night instead of 10-10.5 but still want decent naps too since she seems to need them!

Many thanks.

You could certainly try that, i don't think it will hurt anything.  I  know when i tweak megan's routine / night sleep, i get better naps (so this is reverse but same idea). Be sure and give at least a week to see if helps.  Change is slow in LOs : ;)

Let us know how you get on :-)

Hi Michelle,

I am at my whits end my DD pm nap has gotten worse again  >:(
On Monday she woke up after 1 hr screaming so i picked her up she did a burp then put her back down and she screamed for another hour not going back to sleep.
Tuesday she woke after 45 mins i settled her and she grizzled off and on for an hour then feel asleep for 10mins then it was time for her to get up.
Yesterday she cried when i put her down (never does this) then woke again after 45 mins tried settling her no luck.
Today was the worst i put her down an hour ago and she has been screaming on and off for an hour. I go in to settle her she stops crying as soon as i leave she starts screaming. She is now lying their but still awake.
Her morning nap has been fine she has been fine sleeping 1.5-2hrs no problems getting up at 11-11.15am. I have been putting her down between 1.30-1.45pm.
She has been a bit grizzly the last few days as she is teething badly could it be that?
I have never had this problem i can usually get things back on track myself within a few days but i think i need some advice this time.
By the way she goes down for the night no problem at 7pm sleeping through till the morning 7/7.30am.

Hi oh no hold on to those wits... :P

The teeth could be adding to the problem, but what stands out to me is the lenght of that 1st nap.  Let me look up the typical sleep for a 6mo old.

Yip:
6 months old:
Night: 12 hours;
Day: 2.25 hours - 2 naps, 1 of 1 hour and 1 of 1.25 hours;
Total: 14.5 hours

She is packing in all her sleep in that 1st am nap.  I would cut that back by 15min every couple days and see if that helps w/ her fighting that pm nap and waking up in a mess.

Hope that helps.

I have shortened her morning nap so she sleeps 9.30-11am and putting her down at 2pm with a few successful days.Thank godness she is going down again no problems and is asleep within 5 mins. However she is teething so badly that she wakes after 45-1hr crying in pain. So i have tried wake to sleep the other day and she slept for 1.15mins and i am going to try it again today is this the best thing to do for her until her teething settles down and should i do it everyday?

Thanks in advance for all your help Michelle  :)

I hope those teethes settle soon  :(

W2S sounds like an excellent plan - yes i would do it everyday until you think things are back to normal.  When i do it, i go for at least 3 days.

You are very welcome :-)

I was just going to respond when i notice you beat me to it. Well wake to sleep worked a treat within a few days. She is back to her old sleeping habits and i think the teething has settled down for the moment  :)
At least i know the W2S works for us and i can try again if we need to (hopefully not fingers crossed)
