Is she trying to quit?
« on: February 24, 2006, 03:52:09 am »
Well, tonight I must say really surprised me and I am not sure what to think.  At bedtime I offered to nurse Lindsey as always and I thought she was latching on and all of a sudden she chomped down rather hard and shocked, startled me and I said ouch in a surprised kind of raised but not mean voice.   After that she kind of fussed a bit and I said it is ok just don't bite Mommy.  I offered again and she refused and so I tried with the other side and she refused that side to.  She ate dinner a little later tonight too so I am not sure whether she was just full and did not want it or If I scared her.  I plan on offering again in the am like normal but if she refused again I guess that means she is through with nursing?  I doubt she will refuse in the am though although I could be wrong.  Should I offer again tomorrow night too?  I guess I will keep offering and if she keeps refusing I will quit offering.  I was kind of hoping to wean her soon or at least by the time she was 18 months old but I was too chicken to try so maybe this is a good thing since it is her doing it on her own?  Thanks for any advice.

I remember reading somewhere else that you wanted to think about weaning but you also didn't want to stop offering! Wouldn't it be great if it could be something she takes the lead with! It's certainly possible she could be starting to self-wean but it may not be a quick process. Perhaps she was a bit nervous after your reaction. Perhaps she just wasn't hungry as you say. If I were you I would offer gently and see what happens but not push it - as your instincts are to do. Or you could wait for her to ask, if she has a clear way of communicating this. Not offering is often a first step people take to encourage weaning. It might be that the bedtime feed will be dropped first. The morning feed could be the last one to go. It would be great if Lindsey got to play a part in ending this special experience you've been sharing. You'll be lucky if it works out that way. Sam often shouts 'more milkies pleeees' so I doubt I'm going to have it so easy!

She could be but it does seem too much of a coincidence that it coincided with an incident. Defiantly keep offering, I'm sure that if shes finished she'll let you know by reacting the same way but from what I've read its usually more of a gradual thing than a sudden one. Shes not getting her molars yet is she? A little early I know but would defiantly have an effect on nursing.

If you do feel its the right time though I'd use the situation as a good excuse for easy weaning (hopefully)

Let us know how it goes :)

Thanks for the replies.  She nursed this morning so we will see what happens tonight.
