When did you switch to a bed?

My daughter is currently 18 months and I don't plan to switch her just yet.  But I was thinking of taking the month of August to work with her (she will be 2 at the end of August).  She will move up to the 2 year old room at her Day Out program and they try to get them to sleep on mats on the floor instead of in cribs like her current 1 year old room.  I was thinking of switching her to her "big girl room" in August as part of her birthday and getting bigger, etc.  We hope to have a second child next spring so that would also give us some time to work with her if needed and not have to adjust to a new baby and a new bed.

My next question is how should I do it?  Should I start with just her naps in the bed at first or go cold turkey and put her in her new room for naps and night?

Hi Crystal,
We went cold turkey with our son. We set the bed up in his room and the entire time talked about how this was his new big boy bed. Then we played and read books on the bed and played night night a couple of times. My son has always adapted very well to change. We went cold turkey on the bottle and paci and didn't have any problems. I would consider the temperment of your LO and how well she adjusts to changes. Then go from there.

She usually does adjust to changes pretty well.  I was thinking about switching cold turkey with a gate on her door and expecting to not get a whole lot of sleep the first week, just in case.

I think he was around 18-19 months. Somewhere in there. He never had any problems with getting up when we first switched him. He just laid down and went right to sleep. Of course he is a child who loves his sleep.  :) He has always slept much more than the recommended amount. The gate is a good idea. That way if she gets up in the middle of the night, she can't get into anyting.

Let me know how it goes when you switch her.  :)

With my older dd we waited until she was 2 1/2, partly because we moved into a new house when she was around 2 and we wanted to have her familiar things in her new room to help her adjust.  At that age we would bring her into our bed in the middle of the night when she woke up (I know, very bad ;)) but moving her into her big girl bed actually made that easier--she would crawl right in without waking us up-lol!

I have heard it recommended (I think by the sleep lady) that you should wait until 2 1/2 when your lo can understand "sleep rules"--specifically the big one--no getting out of bed. Not sure what Tracy's take was on this one.  I agree that it depends a lot on temperment.  I think we'll keep my lo who is a terrible sleeper in her crib for as long as possible!

Ideally I'd love to wait until Carmela is 2.5-3 years old but unfortunately we need the crib for our son the end of May so we will be transitioning next month.  I am so  so so nervous about it.  All the advice I can get is so helpful...thanks ladies :)

We're planning on moving Charlotte into a big girl's bed very soon - we've got a little one due in July and I want to make the transition well in advance so that she doesn't feel like she's being pushed out of her cot to make way for the new baby.

We're going to put up a baby gate at her door, just to stop her wandering into our room in the middle of the night.

We made the switch last month when dd was 18 months. She actually moved rooms as well as into a bed so quite a change but all has gone very smoothly. We prepared the new room with all of her 'stuff' then just made the switch at naptime one day and haven't looked back. 

I think the main thing that has made it easy for us is that we use a safe-t-sleep sleepwrap and have done since dd was very small - so the thing is she thinks she can't get out of bed! We may well have the getting out of bed problems when she is older and wants to sleep without the wrap - time will tell but for now she loves it.

We moved Ewan to his big boy bed when he turned two.  We went cold turkey and took the crib down when we set up the bed.  We did our nightime routine like normal and then PLACED him in the bed just like we did with the crib.  He didn't acutally figure out that he could get out for a month ;D.

Reading Lana's reply made me think of something else. We also just placed our son in the bed, just like in the crib. The first couple of nights he didn't even realize he could get out of the bed. He would just lay there and call for us like he did when he was in his crib. I had to explain to him that he could get up when he was through sleeping. Although, sometimes I wish we hadn't had that conversation.  ;)

I moved Ella when she was 2 - like a PP she didn't realise she could actually get out of the bed unless one of us was in the room for months! Bliss!
We did cold turkey and it worked just fine.

Jack is 2 in a few weeks and I don't plan on moving him any time soon - in fact I was joking to DH last night I'd only move him once he's fallen out of his cot 3 times (JOKE!!!!!). His temprament is so different - Ella sleeps like a stone, Jack is very restless. He can be chatting away for up to an hour before he goes to sleep - if he was in abed I'm sure he'd be up to all sorts of mischief! In fact I am ABSOLUTELY dreading putting him into a bed, and will hold off as long as possible!

I know it sounds stupid perhaps but do you have cot / beds out there. We've just had a second baby and didn't want to make the transition just yet. It didn't actually cost us that much more. It means we can turn the cot into a junior bed when we think she is ready and also it is bigger than a normal cot so gives DD enough room for as long as possible. Just a thought

Ellie-May moved from cot to bed at about 20 months. Mostly because we found out we were expecting Jack and needed her cot for him, and I really did not want her to feel as if the  baby was 'taking' her cot so I wanted to make trhe switch and give her enough time to settle before I was due.
She was already in her own room, but we made a big deal of taking her to buy a big-girls bed, and then started by putting her in it for her daytime nap. We left her cot up for 1 day in case of a complete meltdown, but we never needed it.
She was completely adjusted within a few days and we always told her that if she wanted us she should call us into her room rather than just getting out of bed and coming to find us, and she still does it now. Although now, we are trying to encourage her to get out of bed instead of shouting to us, as she now shares a room with Jack! :) ::)

with my first daughter i changed her to a big bed when she started to climb out of her cot, she was around 2 years old. I plan to get my second daughter in a bed before that stage this time around.

Ryan was in a bed at 15 months , he loved it . our main reason for moving him was that he was always banging into cot bars , he didn't have enough room and was waking all the time. it made it easier that he wasn't walking , so didn't start getting out of bed
