EASY and nighttime feeds
« on: March 08, 2006, 10:43:12 am »
Hi everyone,

My DD is 6 weeks on EASY since 3 weeks and everything is going pretty good. The only problem we are having is that she wakes up at 3:00, and is VERY awake. I then feed her and let her on her own, going there just if she cries, pat /shush her and usually after 30 minutes to an hour she falls asleep.
My question is: On Tracys book she says that if you stick to the routine you should expect at one month:

Day: feed every 3 hours, with 1 and a 1|2 sleep every 3
Evening: cluster feed at 5, 7 and DF at 11.
Wake up: 5 or 6 a.m.

My routine follows Tracys ones until DF. After that I don't understand.
What does she mean by wake up 5 or 6 a.m.? DD suppose to sleep from DF until 5 or 6? Because my Lo wakes up at 3:00 3:30 and then again at 6:00 or 6:30.
I don't mind the 3am feed, I'm just worried to start a Bad Habit, And I really would like to understand what Tracy meant by this.

TIA

Camila

What Tracy's says in the book is a guideline.  All babies are different.  My DD at that age woke twice at night for a feed.  As their stomach grows they can go longer after a feed.

What Tracy means is that some babies after the DF can go until about 5am then feed and go back to bed again.

My DD was different.  She fed at 11pm (DF) again at 2am and again at 4am.  When she got older she could go to 3am and then 5.30am.  Then she cut down to 1 feed at night at around 10 weeks and fed at 4.30am.  Then she gradually began to move that feed later in the morning.  When I thought she was ready, I cut it out completely at 14 weeks, by just popping in her dummy/pacifier and soothing her to sleep.

Remember, what Tracy says in her book is just guidelines.

Thank you very much for your reply!

Can you help me once again? Could you tell me how will I know if she needs the feeds in the middle of the night, or she is just used to wake up at this time?

TIA

Camila

Does she take a full feed? If so, then it is out of hunger.  If she takes less and less, and wakes up at the same time every night, then is a habit.  You try to break the habit, by not feeding her, and sshh/patting to sleep, and then making up for it during the day.  But as I said my DD was eating twice a night for a full feed at her age.

She's eating a full feed, so I will not worry about it. Most of all I'm afraid of incidental parenting, and then having to fix it.

Thank you once again for the much apreciated help,

Camila

Hi there,

My DS was also waking up a lot in the night (he was only 6lb 7oz). I didn't do dream feed but he would go from 7pm to 1/2am at around 6weeks but then we had 1/3/5am wakings. Because he was feeding so much in the second half of the night I was worried it would become a habit but he started to go longer around 10/11 weeks and by 12/13 weeks has started sleeping through with the occasional 4/5am waking if he hasn't fed so well (although he hasn't done this for 3/4 nights). He still lets out a cry around 5ish but then goes back to sleep. I would give it another few weeks and hopefully you'll see the feeds drop and / or the times change. My DD did exactly the same as DS. It can all change in a couple of weeks.

Good luck. J
