Dropping Everything

[Mom to M&M]

After a meal, we usually keep DD in her booster seat a bit so she can sit with us and play. She is fine with this as long as she has a spoon, cup or toy(s) to play with/chew on. However, lately she is dropping everything - seems to be a game to her - she looks over the side of the chair and drops whatever she had and then wants it back and plays with it another minute before dropping it again. A friend of mine suggesting getting it back for her 3 times and then after that telling her we can't keep playing with that toy and giving her something else. Does this make sense? Any other ideas? She's 7.5 months old and very active. Thanks.

Hehe this game sounds familiar to me!
I think your friends idea sounds sensible so you dont find that you are forever retrieving everything over and over and over and over... lol

yup!  i think that we ALL go through this one.  personally, i think its part of babies learning about where things are and where they go and how they come back (object permanence and then some!)
i think its good to set limits on what you will fetch and how many times, as long as you don't see it as a small baby trying to get one over on you!  like most of the crazy things our los do, they are just trying to learn!

I use linkadoos in the stroller but that won't work in terms of eating - we have only a booster seat, not a high chair (space constraints) and there is nowhere to attach the links. So I guess maybe try picking the toy up three times and giving it back and after that saying something like "I'm sorry, we can't keep dropping our toys - do you want this one instead?" and start over? Anything else?

Yes Catherine thinks its a great game but Mummy and Daddy don't and we also do the "On the third time it goes away). Just recently bought a toy that sticks onto the high chair tray to try and help stop this problem.

My ds does this too - I know it's part of the los learning how things work, KWIM, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. We only pickk things up a couple times too before he loses them for good. We also attach things to his high chair, and we all like that!

Those of you that only pick things up a few times before it goes away - do you say anything about this? I know they don't understand - but is it just 3 times and gone or is there some sort of dialogue?

I always say something like "oops, you lost your toy again, you know what that means!" Whether or not they understand is anybody's guess, but how else to they learn what things mean unless we talk to them, KWIM?

I do the same, 3 times and then lets have a new toy with me saying, 3 times is the limit!  I also tell her on the 3rd give back that that is the last pick up and so try and hold onto it.  I don't know if she understands but she certainly gives me a knowing grin!

we also have a booster seat but I use linkadoos on it by attaching them to the harness - would this work with your seat?  just a thought.
