What made you decide to start solids?
« on: April 10, 2006, 18:05:20 pm »
My DS is showing me a few signs I think, and am interested to hear the reasons why you finally made that decision to start solids.

A: reached 6 months
B: was hungry after feedings
C: waking the night after previously sleeping through
D: your ped said to start
E: wanted feeding more regularly
F: Lo was taking lots of interest in food
G: other-please elaborate

Thanks
Cath, 33

Cath
We were D, F and G

G - he was taking a FULL bottle of milk every 4 hours and I wasn't able to fit more in his bottle, I was already giving 12oz at bedtime by 2 bottles  ::)

Because Tyler had reached 6 mo. He'd shown all of the "signs" of being ready before that and he was a big boy, but I put it off as long as I could because he was still happy and thriving on breastmilk. In retrospect, I'm glad I did...it was much easier to fit solids into the day when he was older and had more awake time, and he quickly moved to finger foods so he didn't spend much time in the "mush" stage at all.

Hello there

A and D for me.  She doesn't seem interested in anything but her bottle right now so it is making it hard but I just keep trying to persevere :-\

Actually, I was just going to send out a post to see how long you try introducing the same food before you just move on (after you have ruled out the allergy issue).

The ped said 6 months, so I waited 6 months which was hard...

he:

- wasn't happy after a 10oz feed
- had two teeth
- sat up well in his highchair and sometimes unsupported
- chewed away without having anything in his mouth
- had nearly tripled his birthweight

I would have to say B (he was just plain always hungry), D and F. The doc said at DS's 4 month check up (he was 4.5 then) that since he was just under 20 lbs  :o  :o  that it was definitely time to start the solids. I had been wondering anyway since he was staring at us when we ate, grabbing food out of our hands, and could sit up well if supported at least somewhat.

Sydney, it can take 10+ tries with a new food before a lo decides if they like it or not. So keep trying until it's been quite a few!

Colin Mac's Mom - Thanks for the tip.  For example, if I have tried sweet potatoes the last five days for lunch and she doesn't seem to care for it and I know there isn't an allergy issues, should I move to a different food the next day?  I was just wondering if I should stick with the sweet potatoes for 10+ days and then move to another food or just introduce them later.

I am probably making this WAY more complicated than it should be :-[

I would say all except A as i started at 4 months  :o (yes i know this is early) but it also helped with DD reflux. I have no regretes as DD LOVES her food and is eating really well. Still takes all her bottles which is great.
HOWEVER i would still engourage people to wait to close to 6 months.

A.  Started both dd1 and dd2 at 6m on solids (ebf up til then).

Both of them showed lots of interest in foods before that, but they showed lots of interest in lots of other things too IYKWIM!!

Thanks ladies, this has been really helpful. I don't think DS is quite ready just yet, but I have a feeling its not going to be long!   :P

Sydney: I've read that you can try a new food every 3 days. Annable Karmel though (baby food guru) says that unless there is some history of allergies in you family then there is no reason why something new can't be tried each day. Up to you though.  :)

Sydney, I wouldn't necessarily try it every day, maybe like every other or every two. DS hasn't refused or disliked anything yet so I can't say what I've done....  ;)

I would say F and G.  I first tried at 41/2 months, she didn't like it, even though she was looking at me when I was eating.

Then she started refusing her milk, I hardly got any milk into her, so I thought try a bit of cereal mixed with her formula, then she upped her bottle intake.

Then again at 8 months, when she was having three solids meals, I noticed her intake of formula dropping again, so I upped the solids and she upped in milk intake again.

My DD is a very funny girl.
