Starting solids and iron

My ds (4+ months) has MOST of that. So, I guess I shouldn't start semi-solid yet.

However, ds recently had high fever and was sent to A&E late at night. A blood test was done and he is found to have a lower haemoglobin count. Should I start on semi-solid then, since semi-solids are to provide more iron??

That must have been an awful experience for you.

Well, I did give him brown rice gruel on the BIG day (1st day of 4th month) for lunch and continued for the next 2 days. Each time he'll cry his head off. So, I stopped.

1 week later, I fed him brown rice gruel again. This time no crying. But the next evening, he had fever (which is as mentioned). The fever is brought about, most probably by an overnight stay in an island hotel 2 days before... which we did what holidayers will do... swim, in & out of air-con room (note that typical temp here is 29~30 degC), blaa-blaa-blaa. SO, stopped semi-solid again.

Basically, that's all the food he had so far. What you think?

It's actually home-made brown rice porridge.

The brown rice (washed & dried) is grinded & sieved & grinded & sieved... ... till it's really fine powder. I'll then cook 1 tablespoon of the powder with water.

Call me paranoid... I'm hesitant about giving off the shelf products to my boy now. Not sure if there's any freak accident along the work process. =op

I have heard that home made brown baby rice is diffucult for them to digest.  :-\ That may be the cause of the crying after.

Have you tried an organic baby rice instead?

Not tried anything else yet. The brown rice is organic, but you are right... I heard of brown rice being harder to digest. That's what I eat everyday, it just come naturally to me that I'll grind that. =op

Though he did not achieve all the necessary "signs" for starting solids, guess with regards to his low HB, I should start semi-solid huh?

I think you would need to get advice from your doctor about this, they will know if he is able to start solids or not.

DS & myself are down with cold, so will put this off till his next appointment (early May). Will check with doc then.

Meanwhile, I'll have to start looking out for recipes, recipes, recipes. =)
