RE: starting up breastfeeding again
« on: June 20, 2006, 19:47:18 pm »
Hi girls!

Aaaaaaaaagh!!!!!!!!!! I've slowly weaned my baby off the breast and she's taken to the bottle like a duck to water but i'm feeling really guilty and i'm missing our times together! It's weird isn't it - you get that bond with breast feeding.....anyways i still have milk even though i've stopped now for a week. I'm not getting engorged now but there's still milk in there and i tested it by putting LO on the breast the other day and she was swallowing and gulping like anything!! Is it possible i can start up breastfeeding again??

The only problem is i'm returning to work in 4 weeks for just 2 days a week but i work very close to home so i suppose i could always come home in afternoon to feed her????

Any thoughts??? And please please please say i can start breast feeding again because i really want it back!!!!

Thanks for listening.................

You can absolutely try!  Sounds like you may have a good chance since the milk is obviously still there.  Take a look at this link and see if it helps.  Post back more questions.  Best of luck to you!

Absolutely!

You will probably need to nurse baby frequently to get your supply back up.  How old is baby?  You may find you need to supplement with formula until your supply gets back to where it needs to be.

Nurse every 2 hrs during the day.  You can also try pumping for 10 min after each feeding.

Even if you aren't able to exclusively breast feed because of returning to work, some breast milk is better than none.  You may find you're happy bf in the morning before work, and in the evening before bed, and using formula during the day, if that's what works for you.

Thanks girls!

I'll try that then. I think the morning and evening will be fine. I let her suckle for a long time this morning and she loved it. And me too of course!!!

Thanks again

as long as it's not been too long since you stopped it shouldn't be too difficult, but you have to persist to get it going again.  since you say you still had some milk i don't think it'll be too hard at all.

babies do love to breastfeed, as i think they really love the contact as much as we do.

a friend of mine works 2 days a week, she just gets the carer to give bottles of expressed mil. when she's at work she takes breaks to go and express, and she freezes it at work, brings it home and puts it in the freezer at home so there's always some there for the carer.  so i guess she saved some uiup for the first day over a fwe weeks, then she put all wednsdays milk in the freezer and baby had it on thursday whilst she wasworking, and then thursday milk went in the freezer to have the following wednsday.  she's been doing it for about 4 weeks now and it seems to work for her!
