oil with carrots?? anyone heard of this?
« on: April 26, 2006, 21:26:07 pm »
I was told today by some other mums that I should add a tiny bit of vegetable oil to cooked and pureed carrots before giving it to my baby. They said it helped keep the vitamins in it or something along the lines.
Has anyone heard about this before? I want to start feeding him carrots, but I want to confirm this first.
Thanks

The only reason I know of for adding oil (or butter) to a baby's food is to add calories, if the child isn't gaining weight like the doctors would like. What keeps the nutrients in (or gets them out) is how you cook the vegetable. Boiling is the worst method and steaming is probably the best for keeping vitamins in.

You can actually SEE the oil working :)

Give the baby just steamped pureed carrots and a lot of it will come out the other end undigested. Add some oil and you get a "proper" poo

 ;)

Just a TINY amount though, unless the baby is underweight, then you can add a bit of butter instead of oil...

Great, thanks for your replies!
I think I'm going to buy a steamer tomorrow and start with the carrots and orange poo!  ;D
Hope he'll like them, though!

Hey Steffi!  Does that work with the jarred stuff as well?   :)

With some. Some jars have the oil added to it already, others don't. If it's not added, in the early days of weaning I added some. Now his digestive system is mature enough and he doesn't need it anymore...

OK, I was convinced I'd give him carrots today at lunch time, so I prepared them last night. BUT I COULDN'T PUREE THEM!!! My blender is very small and I just couldn't puree them in a way he'd eat them, iykwim...
So how do you puree carrots?? Also, I added the oil (tiny bit) and a tiny tiny bit of sea salt for flavouring purposes, and I tasted them and they were AWFUL!!! Then I decided to go to the shop and get a jar and try it that way first... but I think he has diarrhea (spelling??) so I'm going to wait.
AAAHHHH  >:(
Any ideas on pureeing carrots? Seasoning them??
Thanks!!

ps: I think this is the wrong forum for cooking suggestions... should I post it in Baby Food Recipes or just leave it here?

I use the blenders that make smoothies... You know the big cup ones (my English is still not too good  ::)) ?

And I cook them for quite a while, so that they are soft. I was recommended NEVER to put salt in baby food because it is bad for babies  ???

If he has diarrhoea, it sometimes works to add some sweet potato to the carrots. Worked for us :)

Boiling isn't bad for carrots, steaming isn't either, apparently neither is microwaving. There is not much of a difference in nutrients between steamed, microwaved, tinned or frozen carrots. Source? Mythconceptions in "Fortean Times"...  :P There are all sorts of people doing all sorts of studies with all sorts of results. Everything is different in afew years. We were told (by the German society for asthma and allergy) to use linoleum in our flat, carpets are bad. Now we are told to get carpets because it catches the dust. Then we were told to keep Scotty of cats and dogs for 6 months. Now we are told that babies who grow up with cats and dogs are less likely to get allergies and asthma!

So don't trust my source either :)

Thanks for the tips!!

I'm working on the diarrhea at the moment, hence I started with potatoes instead of carrots today. They seemed to have worked, and he liked them. But I haven't forgotten my carrots!!!!

I agree with what Scott's Maw says, opinions change all the time, so I'm a strong "follow your instinct and common sense" believer!

Off to bed, thanks again!

Vitamin A (which carrots contain a lot of) is fat soluble so if you eat it with a source of fat it will be easier for the intestine to absorb. Other fat soluble vitamins are D E and K. other vitamins are water soluble. If your lo has milk with his/her carrots that will contain some fat though too.
