? Frequency of BM-Dr has me giving suppositories
« on: May 03, 2006, 20:23:27 pm »
Im soooo confused and frustrated!!!  My pediatrition says that my dd should be having a bm everyday...if she isn't, I should give a suppository.  And try to feed her 2oz of water in between feedings.  The public health nurse said that was crazy!  She said that BF babies can go up to 10-14 days without a BM.  Most of the info I have read supports the health nurse.  Before I go back to my doctor to see about another pediatriton, I would like some more solid evidence of which stance is right.  I am uncomfortable giving her a suppository everyday!
She  is 20 weeks old.  Has 4-5 wet diapers a day. I am breastfeeding

{{{hugs}}} It is so frustrating when you get conflicting information.

I would tend to follow the nurses advise as well, however I will move this post to the breastfeeding thread and the ladies there can assist you further  ;)

I would look for another dr.  My son went 5 times a day and then all of a sudden started going once every 5 days.  It is all normal.  I think I would start to be a little concerned around a week, but I'm sure that's normal for some babies.

I think that your doctor is not offering good advice at all.  No wonder you are stressed by the situation.  Listen to your health nurse, she knows what she's talking about.

So sorry you had to go through that.

just wanted to give more support-- my pediatrician says as long as dd isn't straining, and it is the right (creamy) consistancy, then she isn't constipated and not to worry!  my lo started off with a bm every 1-2 hours in the hospital, and then slowed to 2-3 a day when my milk came in, and then slowed even more to 1 every 2, 3, sometimes 4 days.  it is very nervewracking when there isn't any bm, i know, but don't worry.  breast milk has much less waste than formula, so babies tend to absorb every little bit of it, and it takes a while for there to be enough waste to produce a bm.  good luck in your search for another dr!

I was concerned with my los bm (too many I thought) so when I inquired at the hospital, the bfing clinic, and the doctor's (yes, I like to get many opinions ;)) they all told me not to worry about bm's- wide range is considered normal. I can't imagine a doctor saying to give a suppository if a lo goes one day without!

My dd was breastfed exclusively and only ever had one BM a week from the time she was born until she started on solids at 6mths and then went to once a day. My midwife assured me it was totally normal and doesn't indicate constipation nor the likelyhood of becoming constipated when on solids and she was right.

ETA: Just realised I put that it was once a day, when I meant once a week... ::)

Just got back from a breastfeeding clinic that the local health unit runs---the 2 nurses that were there also agreed that the suppositories were not a good thing.  So, when I go to my dr tomorrow I am going to try to see if I can be referred to another pediatrition (my dr won't take her on as a patient--long story and very frustrating)  The joys of the Ontario medical system!

Just wanted to say I hear you on that one! My doctor has taken on my lo as a patient but has given me incorrect advice regarding bfing and would not refer me to a pediatrition when I requested it, seems there's a shortage and no one wants new patients. I am also in Ontario! Good luck.

I think you've already covered this but the doctor is utterly wrong if your baby is breastfed. The public health nurse is right. Bf babies regularly go several days and a week is not uncommon. It has even been reported that healthy breastfed babies can go 2 weeks +. If you are mixed feeding or formula feeding it will be more regular but even then I certainly don't see why a suppository should be necessary. There are much more natural less invasive things to recommend.
I'm afraid it does suggest the doctor in question is not very well-informed about breastfeeding.  :(
Good luck with changing.
