giving baby water in bottle and "choking"
« on: May 05, 2006, 23:04:27 pm »
Hi everyone
My twin girls have just turned 6 months and I've started them on solids. Normally after their solids I give them some sips of water from their bottle. My question is that each time they drink water from the bottle, they end up "choking" and coughing (like they've swallowed it the wrong way). Has anyone else noticed this problem with water? They drink formula from the bottle without any problem (and they've been bottle fed since birth)...I guess because the water is thinner conistency than formula it's harder for them to drink. I've bought some Avent Trainer Sippy cups, but haven't used them yet (I'm afraid the problem would be worse with a sippy cup). Any advice?

Thanks!

HJL - I have the same problem, but with the sippy cup.  I do think that it is because it is thinner.  Maybe with the bottle you could use a smaller nipple size?  That way less water would come out per sip.  I watch dd and listen and as soon as I hear the water go in, I pull the sippy out so she doesn't take too much at one time

My thought would be to put slower flow teats on the bottle when you give your Lo's water, I think it must be the consistency (or lack of it).

This happen with both of my girls. However if I put a drop of juice (100% pure) in their bottles they were ok. ??? Go figure!!!!!
