sliding down positioner and turning around?????
« on: May 10, 2006, 16:30:09 pm »
My 10 week old has been sleeping in a positioner since birth.  it's a cushion that slightly raises her back and head and has 2 wedges on either side.  Since she has been in her crib she has been wiggling her way down the positioner and now she has actually gotten completely off of it and even turned herself 90 degrees!  i'm a little afraid when her face ends up btwn the 2 wedges.  How worried should i be about her moving? is it normal?  does this mean it's time to ditch the positioner?  she's wrapped fairly tightly in a miracle blanket do you think she'll still move around so much w/o the positioner?  any advice would help.  Thanks  ;)

hi newmommy!
i could have posted this myself... my 11wk old was in a "snugglenest" in her bassinet... she started out in it in our bed, and i moved it to her bassinet to create a familiar environment.  it isn't raised, but it too has two wedge sleep positioners on either side.  and we also use the miracle blanket :)  about a week ago, i gave up worrying about her moving about so much and just ditched the snugglenest.  she would start like this (--) and move to (l  ) or even once went a full 180 degrees and was between the snugglenest and the side of the bassinet!  i decided if she was going to move, then i couldn't control that, and i could just make her bed safer by removing anything extra that she could suffocate on.  does your lo need to be raised because of reflux?  i would move to trying it without the positioner and if she does need to be elevated, then elevate the crib mattress with some hard books or some wood planks or something like that.

hth!

no she doesn't need it b/c of reflux.  i am figuring she'll move w/ or w/o it but you made a good point about removing anything extra from the crib.  i'm just a little nervuos about her not having the cushy incline! do you think she'll notice?   i guess the only way to find out is to try right?!  thanks  :)

i was worried when i took mine out that she'd notice it being more "open" than she was used to (not sure if you know what a snugglenest looks like, but it has sides to it from about the torso area up to the head, as well as a "headboard" at the top, if that makes any sense.  it's open from torso down, but the positioners are at the torso area), and that she wouldn't feel as safe, but we just went with it, and if she noticed, i didn't notice!  if she does, it's just like any other transition, and you can maybe slowly wean her from it if you think she needs that (mine had a little mattress pad that the positioners were attached to, and my plan was to keep her on that for an extra day or two if we needed to).  good luck!

I had my lo in a wedge too. She started to scoot out doing the same things as your lo's. Once i determined she wasn't going to have flat head syndrome bc she moved so much, I took it away. We too had a basinet. I tried using it in the crib but she moved so much that it was pointless  ;D

Hi ladies. My bub is 8mths old and he always slept with the positioner for the same reasons. I have tried to get rid of it a few times, but he is not used to that much freedom so it is impossible for him to fall asleep as he is farting around the whole time. I am trying to get rid the swaddle as well and it has been hard. Anyway, I am tucking a blanket around the crib mattress. I tuck in and I think he is still in the wedge. So far he has been sleeping without the wedge for a few days now.  ;D To make a long story short, if your lo doesnt need the wedge get rid of it now.
