Q re pumping and hindmilk...
« on: May 16, 2006, 12:06:59 pm »
I have been back at work almost 6 weeks now and have been pumping about 10-12 oz while at work in 2-3different sessions.  My midmorning pump yields the most milk, usually 6oz, but when the milk 'settles' in the fridge there doesnt appear to be much cream(which i presume is what the hindmilk is....correct me if im wrong!), Usually only a thin layer on the top.  I remember feeding my friends baby ebm and it was very creamy, Whats up with me??!  Lily is doing well, she isnt a big plump baby but she isnt scrawny either.  Its funny but if i had never pumped i wouldnt ever think there was a problem! ::) :P

You would expect the hindmilk's thickest components to only be a thin layer. Hindmilk is made up of proteins and all the other clever stuff. Pure fat is only a teeny bit.
Here is a photo of what is 'normal' (scroll down, the photo with the single bottle at the top is colostrum).

Do not worry. Your milk will vary enormously and your description sounds fine anyway. Lily sounds like she's doing great.

Keep up the good work! (that's your boobs I'm talking to)

I just re-read your post and focused on your yield!!!!! :o Good heavens!
Well done ladies (still talking to your boobs).
