PM nap length for my 9.5month
« on: May 17, 2006, 00:51:05 am »
Ok girls i have been trying to sort this out for the past month on my own but think i need some input and guidance with this. DD has overall been a great sleeper we put her down and she is asleep within 5mins naps and bedtime. Was sleeping 12hrs at night 7-7 and 1x1.5-2hrs and 1x1,5hrs until from 5-8months old. Then things started to change she started waking at 6/6.30am some morning and her PM nap got shorter until it was 45mins  >:( I tried putting her down earlier,later,W2S these only worked for a few day and then she would do a 45min sleep again. I tried limiting her AM nap but this makes her VERY grumpy so that was no good.
Ok things that have happened over this time are: got 4teeth and i think more on the way and she started crawling/standing in the past 2weeks.
So my question is am i putting her down at the right times for her naps or is it just the above milestones that are effecting her PM nap. I don't mind if she sleeps 1hrs for her PM nap i just don't want her to get use to sleeping 45mins and worry this will then happen to her AM nap. I have posted out routine for the day when she wakes at 7am which has been back to doing most days. If she wakes at 6.30am i put her down at 9.30am for her AM nap.
Your imput would be much appreciated  :D

7am - Wake
7.30am - Breakfast
8.30am - Bottle
10am - Sleep 1.5-2hrs
12.30pm - Lunch
1.30pm - Bottle
2.30pm - Sleep (if she gets past 45mins it is usually 1hr15-20mins which is great)
3.30/4pm - Snack
5.30pm - Dinner
6pm - Bath
6.45pm - Bottles
7.15pm - Brush teeth, into sleeping bag, story and Sleep for the night.

Hey there Natasha!

As you know. Marisa is pretty similar - LOVES the long morning nap, etc. I'd say in their case it's better to let them take the long morning nap if they are only going to be cranky otherwise and still limite the afternoon nap. Honestly, if she wakes happy from the 45 minute afternoon nap and makes it OK to bedtime with no night wakings, I don't think it's a problem and I don't think you need to worry about her getting used to it and cutting her morning nap as a result. Many babies at this age take a 45 minute morning nap and a long afternoon - yours is just doing the reverse.

Probably the only thing I would tweak is to push out the afternoon nap closer to 3pm if you think she can handle it (maybe 2:45 otherwise).

But as long as she's happy and rested I think it's a great routine that works for her! Ours will just be babies that keep pushing out the morning nap and eventually drop the afternoon one...

Also- teeth and developmental stuff can definitely have an affect too...

Thanks girls for your reasurance  :D
Karen i think you are right about pushing out her PM nap to 3pm, i put her down at 2.30pm the other day and she fussed for 20mins before having a crappy light nap (usually asleep within 5mins). How long does Marisa sleep in the PM? What is her awake time between naps? She also has a cold at the moment which i think is also effecting her naps  ::)

Marisa lately only wants to nap. She's also been fighting a cold and tummy bug and teething and not eating solids. She'd probably take 2 two hour naps these days if there were time. Her A times are generally 3 hours in am, 3.25-3.5 in pm and same before bed.

Ok the last few days she has been sleeping 11.5/12hrs at night  :o
However i have found if she only sleeps 1.5hrs in the morning then she still only does 45mins in the PM. I understand that is she sleeps 2hrs in the AM then she probably only needs 45mins in the PM as her total nap time is 3hrs now days.
Is this just a habit thing or has she just has enough sleep. Is 2.5hrs sleep during the day enough?

Thanks Stacy i think i am worrying to much  :P
I guess she is getting older and needing less sleep. I should be thankful she is sleeping well at night and having a good morning sleep. It is just that she always had slept more than average.

If Natasha is sleeping 12 hours at night, 2.5 during the day is likely plenty - 14-14.5 hours total sleep is totally average at her age, 14 even more likely. I'm lucky to get 13.5 or 13.75 total hours most days. As long as she sees happy and is eating and sleeping and playing I wouldn't worry at all.

Thanks Karen i am sure we will be doing the transition from 2-1 before 12months. DH wants me to try doing it now but i think she is to young. I think while she still is taking the PM nap regardless of how long it is we will just go with it. She wakes up happy from it and makes it ok to her bedtime of 7.15.30pm no worries.

Ok update DD slept 11.5hrs overnight, 1.15hrs this morning and yes 1.15hrs for her PM nap so she isn't stuck in 45mins for her PM nap  ;D I think she was just unsettled the past few weeks due to teething and her cold. Lets hope she keeps it up. So like Kaleb Stacy i think Catherine only needs 2.5hrs during the day now.
