Spitting Up
« on: May 20, 2006, 03:08:14 am »
Hello I have a 10 week old son, who is always Spitting Up. We talk to the doctor about this and he sent us us for an ultrasound to check for "pyloric stenosis" but they said thats not the problem, if anyone has any thoughts that would be great thanks

Hi Claire,

Check out the colic, reflux & crying board. There are a few stickies at the top of the forum that list symptoms for some of the things it could be. He could have a degree of reflux but as long as he is gaining weight and not in any obvious pain you may just have what my doctor likes to call a "happy chucker." Most babies have an immature sphincter muscle when born between the esophagus and the tummy. It's not normally a cause for concern unless there are other symptoms.

Hope that helps a bit...

Sharon

Claire, our stories sound identical!  The dr's scared us with the pyloric stenosis, but it was unfounded and no one even thought to suggest reflux.

I realize now and much too late that my son had reflux.  But as Sharon mentioned, you may just have a spitter.  I found things that comforted my son was being in an upright position and not putting on his tummy after feeding.  My son would throw up entire feeds sometimes 3 times a day, but he still gained weight.  It may make you feel better to know that breastmilk is absorbed very quickly... the nutrients and good stuff I mean.  So although the feed is not staying down, they are still getting what they need.

Also, try little burps every couple minutes and see if this maybe helps...  (it didn't for us)

Or one mom started skipping burps all together.

I hope this helps.

my lo at 4 weeks was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis, ( i never want to go through something like that agian, having to hand your new  baby over to operate on is the worst thing in the world!) but that solved the throwing up (projectile vomiting) but did not solve the spitting up problem, now at 4 months he still spits up quite a bit, i guess some babies are just the spitty kind. i cut down on the burping so much and that seemed to help, but most of all just make sure you got lots of barf blankets over your shoulder. LOL
