7 month old has lost the knack of napping!
« on: May 19, 2006, 15:53:09 pm »
Hi everyone.  I am new to this forum  :)
I have been doing alright so far with a little guidance from Tracys books but need some advice from you kind re people re: my daughters naps.

Cerys is 7 months on Sunday. She is still breastfed.  She has never been a great napper but has been a pretty good night sleeper. Since birth she has done a bigish stint at night and has had 3 to 4 half hour approx naps during the day.  I have tried to extend them but just didnt get there.  Recently she has been doing better and has been doing 1h30 in the morning or early afternoon.  A typical day would look something like this although it is quite variable as she is just gearing up to cutting out her night feed.  (dream feeds don't work for me timing wise)

Anywhere between 6.15 - 6.45am wake
7.00 feed (recently I have not been feeding her if she has woken at 5 for a feed but moving straight on to breakfast at around 7.30 and feeding her after breakfast)
8.00 breakfast (if she hasn't already had it!)
8.30 usually in the morning she will manage being awake for about 2 hours before she needs to go back to sleep so it can be later
9.15 -10.00 she will wake up at any point here
11.00 feed
12.30 roughly 2.5 hours after she has last woken up I try to put her down again - I wait for her to show signs of tiredness etc
12.00 or 1pm she will have lunch either before or after her nap
1.15 wake
3.00 feed
3.45 sleep
4.15 wake
6.00 feed
7.00 feed, bath, bed
4.45 - 5.30 anytime here she wakes for a feed

We have a fairly solid bedtime ritual, music, bath, grobag, dummy, cuddles and songs from mummy, bed with doggy and she usually goes straight to sleep (after alot of previous hard work on our part)
For naps it is music, dummy, cuddles and songs and bed with doggy.  It has been working well for weeks now but all of a sudden she doesn't want to nap.  I do the nap routine and leave her to it and she has a party in her cot. She is so physically able now that she uses her feet against the bars of the cot to push herself around, she plays with her dummy and her doggy, chats away to herself etc  She will amuse herself like this for 20 minutes and then call for me.  I have been going in and doing the tail end of PU/PD with her ie sitting next to her with my hand on her chest talking softly but she just trys to play with my hand and still parties on.  Sometimes she will go to sleep eventually after 15 minutes of this other times I have to admit I give up and get her up again.

So I guess she is getting 11 hours at night and I thought I should be aiming for around 2 hours in the day so either one big 1.5 hour nap and another half an hour one or three smaller naps but I just cant get her to sleep any more.  I definitely think there is some accidental parenting in there somewhere as origionally when this problem started she would go down for her morning nap ok but the others were a problem.  This morning she wouldn't even go down for her morning nap.

Sorry for going on and on but any advice would be gratefully appreciated.  Just so you know going to Wales tomorrow lunchtime so will check back before then and again on Tuesday. (Just so you don't think I am rude and not responding if you have taken the time to reply!)
Thanks

thanks stacy, she has had one 40 minute nap this morning so i will try to extend her awake time and see what happens. she only naps for a max of 2 hours in total on a good day though so i will cut down to 2 naps and see if that makes her extend her nap times.
