When should I do the a.m. bf?
« on: May 26, 2006, 19:53:10 pm »
Hi all-

My son is almost 9 months old and is still waking 1x/night for a bf.  He'll wake anywhere between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. and he is definitely hungry and goes immediately back to sleep after the feed.  I am not too worried about this awakening yet since he was a preemie and we have come a long way from the 4-5 night wakings he used to have.

Anyway, here is my question:  My son's wake up time varies (usually between 6 and 7).  But, since he just ate at 4 or 5 in the morning he is not hungry.  It has been suggested in the night wakings message board that I feed him at the same time every morning.  When should that be?

Also, I noticed that most schedules for babies my lo's age show the bfing immediately following the solid meals.  My son has NO interest in BF immediately following...he'll hardly nurse.  So, his overall schedule looks like this:

7:00 wake and bf
8:00 breakfast
9:45 bf
10:00-11:30-nap
12:00 lunch
2:30 bf
5:30--dinner
7:00 bf
1 bf at night

He gets up at 6:00 about 3 mornings/week at this point, and the morning schedule moves back one hour ( he'll take a 2.5 hour nap if he gets up at 6:00, the afternoon is basically the same).

Do you think his schedule could be tweaked a bit to elliminate the night feed?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Stacy-

The only reason we have dinner is at 5:30 is b/c my 2 year old usually naps until 4:00 (I have to wake her usually) and by the time I get her up and get my act together for dinner, it's 5:30.  I will try for earlier and see what happens.

We have also gotten into the habit of the 9:45 a.m. bf b/c he doesn't eat much at 7:00 and seems hungry again before his nap.  I have been afraid to push it off until the end of his nap b/c he usually naps until 11:30 (with the bf), so if he gets hungry during his nap, he may wake up at 11:00 and not get that extra half hour.

My son used to be a wonderful napper (2 hours in the a.m., 1.5 in the p.m.) and is terrible now.  It seems like I can never get more than 30-45 minutes in the p.m. and the morning is also hit or miss (although when he does nap, it is usally in the a.m.).  It seems like he is starting to drop the afternoon nap--not the morning.

This week is a bad week b/c we are out of town visiting my parents, so we are all out of sync.  But when we are at home, I hardly leave the house b/c I am so dedicated to their schedules.  I'm not sure why he has become such a bad napper.  Any thoughts?

Thanks--
