Baby not eating enough?

Hey girls, Bre is a little over 3 months old, and since saturday she has been eating 2 ounces or so every 3 or so hours, and normally its 4 ounces every 3 or so hours. Shes also doing this at her nightime feedings. I dont know why shes doing this, she not acting ill or anything. any ideas?

Hi there,

Could your lo be teething?  My DS goes off his food if he is teething.

Does your lo start fussing on the bottle and not want to take it after a while ?  If so it might be time to change the size of the nipple as your lo could be getting bored and not getting the milk fast enough.

Thank you for replying. She is teething, she has been for a few weeks now. Some days its worse than others. I switched her to #2 nipples (advent) about 2 weeks ago, and she does fine on them. Do you think maybe i need to start stretching her feeding times? Maybe shes not hungry at 3 hours? try 4?

You may find that she needs to go 3.5 hours to 4 hours between feedings.

If she is teething and is suffering with her teeth, you may want to rub some teething gel on her gums a few minutes before her bottle.

We also use the Advent bottles and my HV suggested that we start DS off on size 2 nipples as they holes are really small and by the age of your lo he was on size 3 - he is now on size 4 and sometimes I think that even that is not fast enough.

You may find that the milk may come out  bit fast for her - if it does, then she is not ready for #3 - but I found if I propped him up a bit more during a feed this helped.

Have you decied if you are going to try and stretch her out to 3.5 hours?

she hasnt been fed in 3 1/2 hours and she is still not hungry, so ill wait till 4 and see...

Sounds like she possibly needs to move to 4gr EASY, here are the signs;

DS put himself on 4hr easy at little over 3months, here are some signs of needing to transition:   https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=41061.15
1. Not taking as much at a feed (baby not as hungry at 3 hours)
2. Erratic Night Wakings
3. They are extending their awake times
4. Starts taking 45 minute naps
I know it goes 'against' EASY, however if you feel you are in a transition stage, you really have to watch his cues and let that be your guide - it may be usefull to keep a log https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=6208.0 so you can track when your LO eats, etc.

I was JUST about to post the same problem.  My lo (who is 12 weeks today) is hardly eating - down to 2 or 3 ounces from 4.  She's been like this for almost a week.  But she doesn't have a fever.  She is drooling like crazy but I don't feel anything on her gums. 

Can a decreased appetite be something else?

I was thinking of increasing the times between feedings but she still gets sleepy after being up an hour.  So that means her naps would be over 2 hours long if we went to a 3.5 or 4 hour EASY.  She does wake up sometimes between sleep cycles and is WIDE awake for about 20 minutes and then ready for sleep again so all together her wake time is over an hour.

What do you guys think?  Longer EASY working for you Mljlmr?  When you said that she wasn't hungry at 3.5 hours, what was your lo doing - sleeping, playing? 
Also, FYI, I use Avent #3 nipples.  My lo makes a mess sometimes but I think she's getting used to the faster flow and is getting better.  It was taking her a really long time to eat with the #2 nipples and she would get bored/tired.

mlee it could be a number of things;

The teat is too slow
Teething - Calum has no teeth either, it is the fact they are pushing up through the gum and the gums harden and its sore for them
They need to change to 4hr EASY - you will find you do EASA or ESA for a while until the routine settled down.

I would increase the flow before chnaging to 4hr.

I just posted on another thread because I couldn;t remember the name of this one.  SOrry about that.

I do notice that her routine hasn't been exactly EAS.  Like I posted on that other thread about not eating as much, I guess it's just wait it out?  Babies are so hard to read sometimes.  I thought that I had her routine established and figured out and now it's off again.  I worry that something's wrong because she's eating less and sleeping more.  I never realized how much time I'd spend worrying about her.

MLEE:  I did switch DD to a 4 hour easy, and she does great now on it. She was like yours for about 2 weeks, and since i switched her everything has been so much easier, shes eating 4-5 ounces every 4 hours, shes also on solids, once a day for breakfast. She also has been sleeping A TON better, she only wakes up once instead of 2 or 3 times. I hope everything has worked out for you!
