grazing !
« on: May 25, 2006, 20:06:31 pm »
Hi,
My son is just over 2 months now and has developed a 'grazing' habit.  He wants to feed every 2 hours and I know if he extended the feed time to 3-4 hours, he would feed better and I could take a rest as well !  Any advice?

Thanks - new mom.

Can you try and add 15 mins at each feed every day or two.

I mean, instead of feeding him when he wants it at the 2 hr mark then try and talk to or comfort him for 15 mins at each feed and then gradually move it to 30 mins if he is ok with the 15 mins.

He may not be getting foremilk and that's why he is eating again 2 hours later? Are you single or double side feeding?

He also may be hitting a growth spurt and want a little more -
I would try offering both sides at a feed, if he is not wanting the second one wait maybe 15 minutes and try again - count as one feed.

Also, adding a little more time between feeds every couple days is a good way to stretch them out as well.

I know some people have been very successful at getting to the 3-4 hour EASY and nursing, but for us, we spent a long while at 2 1/2 hours apart during the day - he just wan't going longer! The biggest key for us at that point was sticking to the routine of not nursing to sleep instead of being so dependent on the clock. Hang in there - you are doing a great job!
