Being sick after brestfeeding
« on: May 24, 2006, 09:33:40 am »
My LO is 3 months old and she has just started to be sick rather alot in the mornings.  After she has had her morning feed - she seems to bring most of it up again over a period of half an hour.  The sick is sometimes thick then gets quite runny and clear (this is more usual).  The afternoons do not seem as bad.  She has one formala at night and sometimes one during the day if out and the rest of her feeds are breastmilk.

She does not seem to be in great pain, she does squirm abit on the beast, but generally seems happy.

Should I take her to see the doctor?  This is quite upsetting for me, moreso than for my LO probably

If it is concerning to you, I would at least place a call into the doctor.  They may want to see your lo and check her out.  How long does she feed?  One breast or two?  How many feeds in 24 hours?

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Hi there, I have no idea what it may be.  It could be something as simple as she's just started spitting up some meals.  It could be a stomach bug or perhaps you recently introduced something new in your diet that she's having a reaction to?  Do you give her tummy time right afterwards?  Maybe she's getting some burps stuck down....  you could try unlatching a burping every few minutes to see if this helps.  Also keeping her upright after a feed may help.  I think if it is worrying, I would take your lo to your doctor.

It may rest your mind to know that all the nutrients and good stuff in breastmilk is absorbed VERY quickly, so although there isn't much staying down, she is getting the goods.

To calm yourself , place call to doctor.
My LO spits up sometimes and one day he really throwed up and when I called they said to really keep eye on him and keep him upward position after feed for a while and when it happens despite this, for 3 days row  to bring him in

o my god, i have the same problem with my 7 week old. Except with him it happens about 75% of all the feedings (I exclusively breastfeed). Spits up so much like 3 or 4 times after each feeding, it's so much spit up. I got so worried I went to the doctor. He told me to cut out dairy. So I tried that for a few days, one day I did not eat any dairy whatsoever and it kept happening. So I went back to teh doctor, he gave me some antacid for reflux. I have been giving that to my baby but it is not working at all. I am starting to think it's the dairy thing again. My lactation nurse says to cut out dairy for an entire week before any changes would occur. that is hard to do! But I do notice that the vomiting is worse after I have milk, cheese is not as bad. So who knows, the doctor also said "Just ignore it, he's gaining weight and that is all that matters"...it's not easy to ignore your baby getting sick so often. Let me know if you cut out dairy and if that helps or if you try anything else that helps...

Hi, this happened to Keira when she was little.  This is probably more for what is happening to MGardner because her lo is quite young.  Anyhow, Keira started projectile vomiting at aroung 2 weeks old.  It was really scary, when dh was holding her up on his chest, her vomit flew to the other couch cushion, and it was never a little spit like she sometimes does now, but it was like what an adult would bring up.  She had thrush, so we took her off her medicine, which never did work, then her dr said to take away her Vit D drops until she got older.  She is still only bf.  We then elevated her mattress, always changed her clothes/diaper on a pillow, and kept her upright after she ate for at least 1/2 hr.  She aslo played on her boppy lots.  All this seemed to help becuase the projectile vomitting stopped and she would spit up maybe once a week.  She is now 5 mos old, and spits up a little more, but she is quite active!  Hope that helps a little

Re cutting out dairy - you need to cut out all dairy for 2 wks to see if that makes a difference.  It takes about a week for it to get out of your system.  It can be difficult to do since there is diary hidden in so many products (read the labels) - but to see if dairy is a problem, you really need to cut it out entirely for that 2wk period.

Also, both of my los (2 year old and 14 week old) did the same thing.  They both have reflux and during the morning feed my breasts area always fuller than normal and the flow is fast.  My Lo is not good at stopping when full and because there is so much milk available she gets too full and throws up a lot.  I corrected the problem a little by only nursing one side in the morning, burping more often for that feeding and keeping her upright.  She still does spit up a lot stil (every feeding) but this has helped the morning feed not be worse than all the others.  Also, she is usually hungrier than the daytime feeds and she drinks really quickly.
