going off formula
« on: May 17, 2006, 10:49:20 am »
I was so glad i logged into this site as it put my mind at rest to read other mum's comments.  My baby is 10 months old and at the moment is probably taking 3oz of formula in a bottle 3 times a day!! I give her readybrek and custard to make up for this but unfortunately she is still quite small, she only weighs 16 pound, but despite that she is happy, healthy, well developed and extremely active!!

Hi Nicki,

My 10 month old is the same - has days where he will not take a bottle at all.  My DS is a big boy 22lbs, so if he does not have all his milk one day, it does not do him any harm.

One thing I have noticed is that when he goes off his formula, or only takes a minimal amount it is due to teething.  We once had a bottle strike that lasted 5 days cause he was teething and it hurt to suck.

One thing I did do was try rubbing some teething gel on his teeth about 10 minutes before he was due for his bottle - sometimes this helped and sometimes it did not.

If he did not have much milk in a day, I would wait until he was asleep and make up a bottle and give it to him as a dreamfeed even if it was midday - at least I had my mind at rest that he had a bit of formula for him.

Like Yaya said - Has your lo always been on formula?  If so what are the usual amounts that your lo would take in a day?

Hi, yes she's always been on formula but have just changed her to follow on and she seems to be guzzling it!! Maybe she just didn't like the taste of first one!! Yes goes off food/milk when teething - two top teeth coming thru!!  This is my 3rd child and she is so different to other two.  If she doesn't eat I just give her finger foods - grated cheese, cheddars etc and she loves it.  I was more worried about her fluid intake than how much milk she was taking but as I said it seems to  have improved since going on to follow on - fingers crossed!!  She now takes between 15-20oz a day in bottles and food but before changing was probably more like 10-15oz!

I was so happy to come across this website.  My 9-mth old son is starting to refuse his bottle.  I've tried cutting back on solids, but that doesn't even seem to peek his interest to the bottle.  I think it is due to a tooth coming in.  He won't use a sippy cup, so I have been reduced to getting water in a straw (with my finger on one end) and releasing it into his mouth.  This seems to help at least with hydration.  Is this something that will eventually resolve itself????

Thanks

Hi there,

i went through exactly the same thing with my lo - due to teething, we went 5 days where he would not drink a bottle - I really panicked, but realised that I could not force him.  What I did was wait till he was asleep to try and get some milk in him - this worked, and I also used a lot of his formula in his food like mashed potatos etc.

Just so you know - this tim will pass.

Hugs, I know what you are going through.

Keep us posted on how you get on.
