Could someone please explain how much a newborn should nap? - how long?

What if they miss their morning nap should the next one be longer?

Ally...when my daughter was "newborn" I pretty much let her sleep as long as she needed to. When they are only a few days to few weeks old, they really need alot of sleep. As long as they don't have their days and nights mixed up...I would let your lo sleep as much as he/she needs to.  I would say that certainly if she/he missed the morning nap then you should let him/her sleep longer during the second nap!  :D

My LO is 5 weeks.  He got up last night around 1am for a feed. Then got up at 5:30am and went back to bed by 7:30am.  I am waiting to see what he does  now as he is just lying in bed.

He usually goes to bed around 9pm.

today I almost followed this schedule.

Awake and feeding/change diaper 5:30 - 7:30am.

Sleep 7:30 - 8:30am

Eat and awake 8:45 to 10.

Sleep 10-11:30ish

Eat and awake 11:45 to 1:30

Sleep 1:30 to 2:30

Eat and awake  2:30 to 4pm

Now he is sleeping but again I have to work to get him to sleep as he would not go down on his own.  He only cries when we tell him when to sleep other wise he is looking at all the lights etc, in the house, the windows. etc.

Usually he would eat around 4 not be sleeping.  I think he will sleep for 2.5 hours.  He ate a lot this last feeding.

His sleep seems to be more as the day progresses.  Is this ok?
