2 questions 1 about ice cream and 1 about formula
« on: June 10, 2006, 09:06:31 am »
My DD is nearly 1, can she have ice-cream?

Also, she is still on four bottles a day, 7oz at 6.30am, 6oz at 11.15am, 6oz at 3.30pm and 5-6oz bedtime bottle.  She has 3 meals a day, no snacks as she has milk, will this be okay?

I tried for 1 day by giving her 3 bottles and snacks mid morning and mid afternoon, but she was grumpy all day.

TIA

I think she should be ok to have ice cream as they are  allowed to drink cows milk from 12 months anyway. I am sure one week wouldn't make a difference.

As for the formula, Harvey still had a couple  of bottles of formula until he was about 18 months for a couple of reasons. 1. because he is vegetarian and i wanted to make sure he had enough vitamins whilst still eating a good diet and 2. because he just seemed like he needed those extra calories.

If you think she needs the bottles then i really don't see any harm in her having them. As long as she is eating 3 meals a day and not substituting solids for formula then it should be ok.
Willl she swap 1 bottle of formula for cows milk do you think? Maybe that way you can whittle down the bottles.

About the ice cream.... DS still hasn't had any because of the sugar and the fact that it's almost impossible to brush his teeth properly. That's just my opinion and the way we're doing things. I'm not going to be withholding all sugary foods forever, I just feel that at this age, he should be filling up on more valuable/nutritious calories. There'll be plenty of time for him to have treats.

Just my 2 cents.  :)

my hv actually recommended ice cream when DD was teething badly and had an ear infection and she was only 11 months at the time. i see nothing wrong with it as its only a very very occasional treat (esp in this hot weather!!). My dd is still having 3 btls a day (although shes starting to drop her early a/noon one) but shes always been a mik addict!!
BTW hope you don't mind me asking but waht part of norfolk are you from- we live in Thetford, Norfolk

I will give my DD ice cream then, mainly due to the hot weather we are having and her teeth have been bothering her just lately, the molars are starting to come in  ::)  I can finally brush her teeth, she lets me brush them, but only for a few seconds, then she wants the brush so she can brush them herself.

Thanks I will do that as soon as she is a year old, see if I can't wean her off at least one bottle.  Now she has finally found a cup that she will take juice out of, I can plan how to drop one.

Sashas Mummy,

I live on the outskirts of Norwich  (sprowston and old catton border).

If you are worried about the sugar content of icecream, hows about trying frozen yougurt or mking ice pops from smoothies(my fav) :)

Good ideas! Thanks! I've used juice to make ice pops before. I'll have to get out the popsicle molds again.
