Help! 20 minute jolting awake
« on: June 11, 2006, 14:40:27 pm »

Please help me, I've been doing the sshh / pat  method with my 4.5 month old don , Gabriel , for a week.  The reason I started it was that although he has a very good nighttime routine, often sleeping through the  night , or waking once for a bottle, I made the big mistake of driving with him in the mornings. He would then sleep for 1.5 to 2 hrs. The next couple of sleeps I would walk with him and he would sleep either in my arms or on the breast. These 3 naps would make up the rest of his sleeps during the day. I started BW as I wanted him to sleep in his cot for these naps. The 1st 2 days I used the pu/pd method and then sshh / pat to keep him in his cot. He did eventually sleep. By the 3rd day I only needed to use the shh / pat method to get him drowsy and fall asleep. The problem is , is that since then I' ve only managed to get him to sleep a maximum on 1hr 15 min, and this with constant patting and sshhing. He always jolts awake at the 20min mark and then really wakes himself up by stretching and rubbing his fingers all over his face. It takes me anything from 10min to 40 min to get him back to sleep again. 99% of the time it takes me 1hr30min to get him to sleep for 2 x 20 minutes. I've tried swaddling him but since birth he has slept with his hands above his head, anyway when he jolts he struggles to free his hands, so I've stopped the swaddling. I really want this to work. Please help anyone.

Have you tried applying pressure on ur lo at the 20 min mark??  I used to time my dd's naps and would go in prior to the jolt at 20 and 40 min and apply gentle pressure on her arms and legs.  This really helped get her thru!!

also at your lo's age, you might wanna try pu/pd.

Thank you so much for replying, I'll definately try the pressure. I did pu\pd for the 1st two days and since then I haven't needed to. He goes down really quickly with the sshh/ pat method, sometimes he's asleep in 4/6 minutes. If he jolts himself awake he's only crying "mantra" and I manage to calm him with the sshh/ pat, although sometimes it really takes awhile. I read in Bw that it could be overstimulation so I've really tried limiting what he does during the day but this doesn't seem to work. Another quick question, will this method eventually get them to go to sleep independantly?

Thanks so much
Jane

For sure!!  I just gotta keep at it!!  I'm like you, I used ssshh/pat first and moved my way up to pu/pd even though at my lo's age I should have used pu/pd.  Even though we still have some probs I can still look to here for help and It's soo easy now to get her to sleep.    The key for us is proper wind down routine!!
