Hours of sleep vs. wake-up time? (grrr)
« on: June 18, 2006, 12:58:42 pm »
So - do some babies just sleep a certain length of time no matter what time you put them to bed, as opposed to having a wake-up time?   My LO has had  a night wakigng problem for months now.  I've moved her bedtime up a couple times, and every time I do this, it gets harder and harder to get her to sleep to a decent later time.  It eliminates the ridiculously early waking, but she actually wants to wake ealier and earlier to start the day.  When her bedtime was 8, she had a 5 AM early waking that would sometimes last over an hour... however, she'd finally go back to sleep, and then I'd wake her at 8 (although, sometimes, she would wake herself at 7:30/45).  When I moved her bedtime to 7:30, just to see if it would help the early waking, she woke for 2 sec. at 5 but then was ready to start the day at 7.  I tried one more move to 7:00 and the 5 am waking went a way for a day or 2, but she wanted to play at 6:30!  So - are some babies totally against the rule that they wake up at a certain time and instead, they only want to sleep a certain length?  I'm soooooooooooo frustrated with this.  I was all excited, ready to try some techniques... then I got depressed.  I rarely have to actually wake my baby in the morning.... she's already awake!  Moms who say that the simply wake they're baby at a different time for the time change.... well - I envy them.  My baby usually is awake, and then I pick a time when I'm willing to go to her.... so she's pretty exhausted by the time I start the day.  Last night she woke up 1/2 a dozen times - each time she put herself to sleep, but then she wanted to start the day @ 5:30!  GAH!  Do I just have to have a later bedtime with my child?  *annoyed*

Hi,

I'm interested to see the responses on this because we have a similar problem with my dd. She is 16 months old, and has pretty much always been an early riser. She used to get up between 6 and 6:30am, but lately it had gotten consistently earlier (between 5 and 5:30am), so we tried putting her to bed earlier. The first couple nights, she slept a longer length of time because we put her to bed earlier, but still woke up between 5 and 5:30. After those first two nights though, she started waking even earlier (4:45am  ???) and has ended up readjusting the length of time to about the same as before. It's very frustrating. So now we're moving her bedtime later again slowly to see what happens. I can't take these early wake ups anymore, and either can she. It throws off the whole day.

Sorry to hijack this post! We need help too...

Thanks.
