6.5 mo & giving water
« on: June 24, 2006, 19:28:58 pm »
Hi! Nolan is 6.5 Months and we just started solids last week, so far he has a serving of rice cereal a day and either a fruit or a veggie. He is BF and in the past few weeks has been eating more and more often. He went through his growth spurt about 3 weeks ago and now I am thinking that because it is so hot (85-90 during the day) that he is thirsty. I have been offering the sippy cup with water for a month now and he doesn't get any water, I have also given him bottles with water in them (he takes bottles with breastmilk just fine) and he just chews on the nipple.

Any ideas on how to get him to drink some water? I work part time and I pump but when he is thirsty and I am not around he guzzles the milk I work so hard to pump and now I am running out of my freezer stash :(

Thanks for any suggestions!

Maybe the temperature? Try it cooler or warmer perhaps, My LO only liked water slightly warm, like her milk, she drinks it anyway now.

I agree the temperature matters when they are not used to very cold things its better to keep it a little warm for a while.  My dd used to just play with the bottle of water at the start cause its a new taste after a while she got in on it.  If you are really stuck try adding cordial or fresh orange just to put a flavour in it, it might be more appealing just a little though.

Thanks ladies! I actually tried cold water today from my water bottle and he liked it! I had beengiving it to him at room temperature. He is also a lot more interested in whatever I have (like my water bottle or my cell phone) than his toys ;)

Keep in mind that breast milk has lots of water in it, so he doesn't actually NEED to drink water.

i know that breastmilk contains enough water to hydrate a baby, but a six and a half month old who's on a 4 hour (or longer) feeding schedule and lives in a hot country may need a little drink here and there, even if it's just to sort out a dry mouth.

adults get thirsty in between meals so i'd imagine babies must too. and i'd think that at the age of 6 months or older a little water's not a bad thing  ;)
