Worth a try.  Some use a fan blowing away from lo.  Also radio static, or regular white noise machine.  We use a crib aquarium thing that plays music for about 20 minutes at a time.  By accident we found a pop cd that puts her out in the car.  Happy experimenting!   :)

We use a crib aquarium thing too.  It works very well, I think it may be the sound of the gurgling water?  I know it makes me sleepy when I hear it over the baby monitor. ;D

We use a white noise machine because it runs all night.  I think that it is comforting to our LO but it's also a comfort to us because we don't have to tip-toe around the house as much.
