Falls asleep while BF
« on: June 26, 2006, 04:29:01 am »
My 4 week old keeps falling asleep while breastfeeding, like after 5 minutes.  He isn't filling his tummy which means he isn't sleeping for very long.  When I put him down in his bassinet he wakes, and acts hungy again.  I get very frustrated.  What should I do?

When he feeds and falls asleep just gently rub the top of his hand. The first 10 minutes of BM tends to make a baby rather sleepy and sometimes the mother.

If rubbing the hand doesn't work then sit the baby up and try and wind him to rouse him a little.

Gosh, Madelaine was sooo bad for that. Rubbing her cheeks, rubbing the soles of her feet; sometimes I actually had to take her off and wake her then re-latch her :) ;)

Changing the diaper always worked for my LO, frequent burping, etc.

Congratulations on your LO and as you can see you are not alone!

Have a look at this too - there's a section on sleepy newborns and EASY:

This phase won't last. You can use some of the techniques to try and keep him awake but newborns naturally do fall asleep as you describe. In the early days they feed little and often. How long is he sleeping? He could just be waking as you move him and you could try and settle him in a different way. Are you starting to recognise hungry cues as opposed to others kinds of unsettledness?

Some babies stop feeding when they feel full due to gas so make sure you are burping him/bring up wind - they call it different things depending on where you come from!!

I changed his diaper in between his feeding, also undressed him some so that the warmth would not soothe him to sleep.  Also rocking him in multidirections may help to wake him up.  Also my LO woke up when I rubbed his back, and of course burpings may help - but mine would not wake up for that.
