Fighting my Nipple!
« on: July 01, 2006, 15:36:18 pm »
My 7 week old Son has just started to 'attack' my nipple during feeds. He has always been an excellent feeder right from day 1, and he feeds for about 20mins usually (mostly 2.5hrs between feeds). However, he has recently started (during the day when alert) to attack my nipple, pulling on and off and making grunting noises whilst feeding, usually half way thru or towards the end of a feed. When he does this he stays on my breast for up to 35 minutes.

Does anyone know why he might be doing this?

There doesn't appear to be any problem with my milk supply (I squeezed my breast during any feed he does this to check milk is still being produced) but he is starting to make my nipples rather sore with all his 'playing'!

Anyone with ideas on why he might be doing it, and more importantly on how to stop him would be appreciated.

Cheers

My LO does this too. I say I am trying to nurse a Tasmanian Devil some times. I find that she does it for one of three possible reasons. She either needs to burp, has to poo, or is done and getting bored. I try to burp her or let her poo then resume the nursing after she has calmed down. Also, sometimes she just needs a break for a minute, and I just let her sit and look around and collect her self, then we can continue.

I hope that was helpful. Good luck!

My LO started to do this around 12ish weeks. It seems to be either wind or he's done with the feed and just wants to play. I unlatch him, burp him, try again and if he's still playing around I end the feed. He seems to have got a lot quicker at feeding the last few weeks. He was taking anything up to an hour to feed but now it's 20 - 30 mins max.
