Dropping the bottles
« on: July 16, 2006, 03:30:33 am »
My DD is 12months in 3 weeks time  :'( where has the time gone.
Anyway she is still having 2x7oz bottles morning before her nap and one before bed. She also drinks 4ozs milk in a cup with her breakfast and dinner. She has yoghurt, cheese and custard everyday and is a great eater.
Just want to know when i can start dropping the last 2 bottles she generally looks for them both and am worried that she will miss them to much.
A few questions do i replace the morning bottle with a snack and give her perhaps an sippy of milk with it?
Should i offer her some milk in a cup before bed instead of the bottle?
How much milk does she need after 12months?

TIA  ;)

I am going to lurk, because Calum is also taking 2 bottles and milk in a sippy or straw cup.

So, here's the against the grain advice of what I did.  :)

Emilio, now two still has a bottle before bed.  Until a few weeks ago he was having a morning bottle and sometimes and afternoon one.  He eats well, drinks out of a cup and I brush his teeth carefully and floss, so I'm not concerned about milk on teeth.

I know friends who felt a great pressure to wean off the bottles.  Just the other day at Emilio's doctor's visit (and she's a phenominal pedi) she mentioned I should get him off of his bottles and I wanted to ask why.  He eats a wide variety of foods, nothing processed, mostly organic, isn't using bottles for a crutch -- he just happens to love them.  I weaned him down to only one a day at bedtime unless ill, he naps without one and personally I can't come up with one reason to take it away.

Diego had a bedtime bottle until two and a half, maybe a bit more, at which time we substituted a sippy cup of milk before bed and made a gradual transition.  Now, this may feel too old for you, but at one years old they are still babies!  For the life of me I can't see why we're forcing babies off of the bottle.  Many women continue to breastfeed right past a year, what makes having a bottle past a year any different?

Just wanted to second the against the  grain advice, doing the exact same with our ds who is now 2.  My sister inlaw did the same with her ds who is now 2.5 years old.  He just transitioned to sippy of milk before bed instead of bottle.  I don't see the big rush either.

If you decide to go ahead and drop the bottles, I'd offer a snack and sippy of milk instead of the morning bottle. When we dropped Tyler's bedtime bottle at 15 mo (we waited out of fear!), we didn't offer anything in its place. We were having a hard time fitting brushing teeth in because the bottle/sippy would get him all relaxed and drowsy, then going and brushing teeth would wind him up again. ::) We just changed his night routine up a bit and it worked out fine. We'd give him a snack and sippy shortly before bed if he didn't eat much for dinner or seemed hungry.

I thought he'd miss his bottles too, but he really didn't notice the daytime one. He looked for the night bottle on the first night and was a little unsettled, but didn't even notice the second night. It was much easier than we'd anticipated!

For amounts, 16-24 oz per day is usually what's recommended.

Same hear with my DD she had 2 bottles until she was 2years old.She loves her milk even now and she is 5 in Nov she still has at least 3 glasses of milk a day.She loves her milk and it is good for herbones too.

She also had in in a bottle up to 2 years old then changed to a cup,but she had full size cup.

I think why take them off milk if they like it.
