Only mom can feed daughter
« on: July 19, 2006, 03:38:25 am »
HELP!!! I have a four month old daughter. She has always been a hearty eater. Lately I am the only person who can feed her in the evenings. Even her dad cannot. She will cry and cry until I take over. The minute she is in my arms, she instantly stops crying and will eat. We have tried everything. I have left the room, so she couldn't see me, I try sitting near her when her dad is feeding her, talking, singing etc... also, she will not go to anyone but me or her father. Even her grandparents, who she sees on a regular basis. She will cry until she comes back to moms arms. I know she is young to play shy but she is definitly doing it. Any tips on how to get over this, I am at my wits end, as she is in my arms all evening, we can't go anywhere.

kaggrey  :)
Welcome to the boards.

My initial thoughts is that you can try starting off a feed then let her dad or grandparents take over - so build up the time.

How often is a 'regular basis'? Does Dad work away from home?    does this also affect feeding at any other time of the day? Does it affect just feeds?    It is possibly a bit of stranger anxiety.

kaggrey, my DD is exactly the same. She will now go to people but only for a short time. If I leave her with anyone she screams, she gets so upset. She will allow people to feed her now , sometimes, during the day. But she will not fall asleep for anyone else. Dh can put her to sleep in the morning if I am having a lie in, but she cries if he tries to do the bedtime routine. I always end up rescuing, which is probably the wrong thing to do, but if I don't she ends up hungry and screaming herself to sleep, only to wake up again starvivng.

I'm afraid I have no solution for you, but lots of HUGS!  I will also look closely at the replies you get! ;D

The only thing we do is when DH is home at the weekend, he does all the feeds, changing etc to try to get her used to it. He isn't usually home in time for bedtime during the week but if he is he does the bath etc until bottle time.

Also our DD is a little touchy and I think seperation anxiety is a part of touchiness. I'm not sure if that can happen this early though.

Good luck

Thanks for the responses so far. Just to add a little more info, her dad is home every evening around dinner time, she will play with him,let him hold her, but when it comes to feeding, LOOK OUT!!! We have tried to let her cry and not have me come in and rescue her, but she has worked herself into a frenzy and can not calm down until she is back in mom's arms. she will start a feed from dad, will drink about 2.5 oz from her 6 oz bottle, but once she stops for a burp she sreams and won;t continue eating. Please keep the advice coming!!! :)
